/ Save the Hostages, Save Israel (Haaretz Editorial)

Haaretz's editorial raises serious questions about the breakdown in the chain of command within the Israeli defense establishment, suggesting that the decision to carry out the assassination of some of the children and grandchildren of Ismail Haniyeh, may have been made without the knowledge or approval of senior political and military leaders. This points to a concerning pattern of reckless decisions, from bombing a university to employing tactics that jeopardize the lives of hostages, that have only served to complicate and prolong the crisis.

[...] The public has no real way of knowing whether the defense establishment failed to inform the government and obtain its approval before the attack; whether it's true that not even the head of Southern Command, much less the military chief of staff, were informed of the attack in advance; or whether the person who approved the attack was the commander of Southern Command's targeting center, an officer with the rank of colonel. Trust in the system is so low that it's hard to accept the explanations that were given without a dose of skepticism.

[...] If the public doesn't turn out en masse to demand that the people responsible for the rolling disaster they have brought down on Israel vacate their offices and give someone else a chance to salvage the situation, the country's future will be at risk, and so will the hostages' lives.

@oatmeal @israel @palestine The murder of the WCK volunteers was like this too, with the officer who ordered the air strikes apparently going rogue. Apparently.

@oatmeal @israel @palestine Or it’s deliberate, in order for Netenyahu to avoid responsibility and to continue the genocide of Palestinians, to continue unrest in the Middle East. Those in supporting countries should be capable of seeing this and rein it in: but they seem very complicit. In the long run it will not benefit them at all.

@harriettmb @oatmeal @israel @palestine is using obfuscation to try to minimise condemnation of those responsible for its war crimes.
