corroded , in What's your most treasured data?

Like most of us, I have plenty of pictures and such that I don't want to lose. The most important to me, though, are some of the documents that I've saved or scanned from years passed. While a tax return from 2003 or the title for a car I owned 20 years ago aren't exactly useful, it's fun to occasionally look at some of the old stuff and see how far I have come in my life since then.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble , in Renewed drives

Depends on how much you value your data and how much redundancy you have. I bought a 20tb “manufacturer certified” drive from SPD the other day and it tests fine, but I’m not going to put valuable data on it. Maybe if this drive outlives my shucked easy stores I’ll buy more. But for now my main raid array is new drives only that I’ve throughly tested before installing.

    The WhatsApp backups are stored in an area of your Google account that you can't access, so you can't really test without a new phone (or deleting all your data).

    ok, but we're talking about testing backups, which isn't this.

    The process with a new phone (I just had to do this due to water damage) is put SIM in new phone, then it logs in and asks if you want to restore from the backup (you need to enable file access first) and then it restores from a hidden area of your Google account.

    I saw your edit and replied to it - that backup is still inaccessible other than via WhatsApp, although I guess it's a comfort to see that they're there.

    You'd linked "How to transfer your chat history", which isn't testing the backup. If you deleted the data in the emulator, you'd need to login again to test the backups, which puts you back needing a SIM.

    Deebster ,
    @Deebster@infosec.pub avatar

    You can't do anything yourself with those backups apart from delete or disable them:

    As far as I know, the QR code is only for logging in to the web chat (or desktop version, I guess).

    It's possible there is a way, but I looked into it and couldn't make it work. Feel free to try yourself, but this conversation's turning into an unwanted argument and I'm out.

    You're downvoting and calling me wrong based on 30 seconds of research, so I'd say you are the instigator.

    your initial points were incorrect

    The backups in Google Drive are not accessible to you. The source you found doesn't contradict me, because it doesn't mention being able to access that backup, only delete or disable them.

    You can only transfer your account, which doesn't test the backup. Getting to the stage where you'll be able to test the backup leaves you not logged in. The backup process needs a SIM.

    Mkengine ,

    I don't know if this is country specific, but I can just download all my chats as .txt files and do so regularly, as I don't trust Meta not to delete anything and only keeping the last x years or something like that.

    I don't see how - is from within WhatsApp? I can't see anything by browsing on the phone (Android) or by connecting to a computer.

    edit: I can see how to export a single chat from Settings > Chats > Chat backup but not how to get it all without a thousand clicks.

    Mkengine ,

    Sorry, I meant just that, yes. I don't want to archive any chat, just the one with emotional value to me. I do it once a year, so it's not too bad doing this for single chats.

    ShortN0te ,

    You can just backup the Whatsapp directory yourself. Whatsapp creates a message backup file every day or two, even when Google Drive is disabled.
    To recover them you need to copy them over. Not well documented.

    Yup, got my last two 10 TB drives from checking there. Shame all of these stores fronts are making it harder to aggregate data but they sure like to gather up ours with or without permission.

    MangoPenguin , in Question about price per TB
    @MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

    Around $10/TB for used stuff which is what I run in everything.

    Drives are going to fail at some point, regardless if new or used. So I'm not worried about used drives, I test them with a full write/read run initially, and have backups in place.

    henfredemars ,

    Sounds like good practice. If you’re depending directly on the reliability of the drive, you’re doing backups wrong.

    Yup, data loss happens at some point, either hardware failure, software bugs, or just plain old user error.

    Other than family pictures, etc., I've been working on a collection of the episodes of a show from when I was a kid in the late 80s, "Long Ago and Far Away", showing fairy tales from around the world in a variety of art styles and media, with James Earl Jones as host. I've found maybe 2/3 of the episodes so far. Every few years I do another sweep to try to find more.

    Jimmycrackcrack , in DVD’s New Cousin Can Store More Than a Petabit

    I don't really feel like I'm much the wiser, having read this, on how exactly this works. It's storing data in 3 dimensions in layers and uses 2 lasers in both write and the read process. Why multiple layers in 3 dimensions over a single layer as in traditional optical media would yield better storage density is intuitive but the way they're able to do this is not that well explained. I don't understand the relationship between having 2 lasers and being able to store data in many layers. The fact that one laser disables the effect of the other both in read and in write is confusing, one would think "switching off" the writing process done by... not writing anymore, rather than having a second laser which somehow disables the first but in any case the effect of this is said to allow "spots" (are they like pits?) smaller than the wavelength of the light used to create them which is presumably very small and again makes intuitive sense as to how that would allow increased density and thus storage capacity but doesn't help explain the 3 dimensionality. Also, how does firing a laser at a material presumably burn it away to produce a "spot" (pit?) but firing a second laser at it stops this from happening? Similarly, with reading, how does firing a laser at a spot cause it to fluoresce, yet firing a second laser at it somehow causes it to stop doing that? How bizarre.

    On an even more basic level, how do layers work? How does the outer most layer of the readable surface of the disc not block or interfere with the ability to read or write the next layer beneath it and so on?

    quicksand ,

    The spot size is the size of the point the laser focuses on. It seems with the material they've used that there is some kind of interference between the two lasers they use to make a pit smaller than you would expect. There's not a whole lot of information in the article to understand the details. Also, I'm just a guy who works on lasers, getting C's in my optics class currently so take it with a massive dose of salt

    chiisana , in How are data storage prices going to change in the next couple years?
    @chiisana@lemmy.chiisana.net avatar

    A couple of years is a life time in tech, but despite that, I think the one thing that should be the deciding factor is if you’re actually going to need the space in the mean time. If not, waiting won’t make a difference. On the flip side, if you’re going to need it in the next couple of years anyway, then it might be easier to recognize that $320 over 2 years is less than $0.50/day… taking the initial hit and take advantage of it earlier will probably work out great.
