If Trump somehow wins this case, Biden should just wait til the presidential debates and order Secret Service to break Trump's knees live on stage.

veroxii ,

I'd actually watch that.

Kbobabob ,

It sure would be a shame if Trump's knees just gave out on stage...

toiletobserver , to politics in A thought experiment about SEAL Team 6 goes terribly, terribly wrong

If for some insane chance that this wins in court, it seems it is both wabbit season, duck season, and Elmer season before Biden leaves office. No? Not like that? I'm just so tired of giving stupid/evil people a platform.

ChemicalPilgrim ,

We all know Republicans would immediately start arguing for the highest levels of accountability if a Democrat did anything criminal.

Mog_fanatic ,

yep, and this is one of the arguments that bothers me the most. I've had numerous discussions with republicans that go something along the lines of "well both sides do it" or "it's only because a republican did it" and that drives me up a wall. It's like i don't hate political assholes that do stupid stuff because they're republican. I just hate political assholes who do stupid stuff... democrat or republican i don't care. If there's proof that they did stupid illegal crap, they should all be punished. i don't get why this is difficult to grasp lol.

TechyDad ,
@TechyDad@lemmy.world avatar

Right. For example, the Epstein fight logs show Bill Clinton and Donald Trump on the plane. If there's evidence that either one did illegal stuff, I say imprison both of them. (I'd call the flight logs suspicious activity enough to open an investigation, but by itself not enough proof to result in a criminal conviction.)

Did I like Bill Clinton as a politician? In general, yes. There was plenty of stuff that I didn't like about him, but I voted for him for his second term. (I was too young for his first term, but would have voted for him if I was older.) Still, my general feeling that he was a decent President doesn't mean I think he should get away with criminal activities.

Yet, there are so many Republicans that literally don't care what Trump has done. A video could come out definitively proving that Trump had sex with underage girls and even if his supporters accepted it as true, they'd still support him. The modern Republican party is a cult and it's scary.

TechyDad ,
@TechyDad@lemmy.world avatar

Biden loans his son money and his son pays it back. Republicans: "THIS IS AN IMPEACHABLE OFFENSE AND BIDEN SHOULD BE IMPRISONED FOR LIFE!!!"

Trump literally advocates for assassinating his political rivals in the same week that he appears in Epstein's fight logs. Republicans: "Trump was obviously sent from God to lead us and should be able to do whatever he wants with absolute immunity! Including killing anyone he wants dead!!! MAGA!"

rayyy ,

Way more accountability. They want Democrats held accountable for things Republicans do - it's a projection thing they have.

..... and at this point, the individual stupid evil people are not all to blame. It's the following of people, prominent people, professionals, wealthy backers and politicians that are all lining up to support one less than reputable person to push their agenda.

Trump is the tip of a huge ice berg of fascist idiots that really really want to have an unaccountable supreme leader to take full control of everything.

nilloc ,

Just for a taste of how fucked their beliefs are, the magat I asked, said, “Biden doesn’t have this power because he’d not the real president.”

AA5B , (edited ) to News in We’ve Been Thinking About America’s Trust Collapse All Wrong

Aside from the attempts to overthrow an election and violate civic norms from the Republican Party, the brinksmanship, the gall to admit their only motivation is to prevent the government from functioning and the voters who think that’s ok, the guy from Florida freely abusing government power for spite and somehow not being drummed out of office ….. and the “Faux News” they rode in on ….

…. Actually I nominate all news. Once upon a time there was Journalism. The article even mentioned Walter Cronkite as an example of a trusted newscaster but then threw that away. He wasn’t just trusted, he was the front man of an organization that built trust, that competed with others to be most trusted. Journalism had standards and professionalism. They had fairness and objectivity. They built and continually maintained TRUST.

Now all too much journalism is outrage, “content generation”, and clickbait. The industry no longer supports trustworthy news organizations Trustworthy news sources are much harder to find and most people don’t have the skills to filter it from the spew of crap that is called “news”

Why is the world becoming dumber? Doesn't the right want America to be the best and China to lose? Similarly why are other countries favouring the right and just wasting away precious time and resources over issues that were solved decades ago and require basic elementary school logic to understand?

I really think people in 2050s will mock 2020s as the lethally stupid era of the century.

aew360 , to politics in Why Xi wants Trump to win. A second Trump term would allow China to cement its grip on the developing world.

MAGAts would argue they want Trump back because he’s “smart and strong” as if our adversaries want a competent leader of the U.S.

Trust collapse? No hand wringing necessary. Fox news is a 24 hour disinfo campaign designed to erode trust. Start there. Investigate fox and work your way through everyone who has ever appeared on its airwaves. Most importantly this, always follow the fucking money. Youll be well on your way to ferreting out the lack of trust in america.

@leraje@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I don't think there's anything wrong with keeping track of what you've read but that often seems (to me) to lead to things like 'reading challenges' etc.

I remember back on the corporate alien site on r/books some OP proudly relating how many books they'd read this year and the whole thread became this game of one upmanship of who'd read the most books, who could read the fastest, targets for the upcoming year etc etc. Not one comment mentioned if they'd actually enjoyed any of these books.

When the fuck did reading become a competitive sport? Honestly, my single aim when reading is to enjoy the books I read. If a book takes me 2 days to read or 2 weeks I don't give a shit. If that means I read less books that year then so what?

So, yeah, record them by all means, review them on a BookWyrm instance by all means but beyond that, just enjoy the book with no pressure.

Eq0 ,

Yeah, I’m a competitive person by nature and I have to force myself to not keep track of how much I read. It’s silly, I like reading, I see no added benefits to reading “more”, I’d rather read more interesting things, even if slower. But if I keep too much track of my Goodreads account, I start competing with myself from last year and… it makes no sense! But little numbers growing is such a primal push.

I read a lot of books. Literally nobody cares.

Many of them - perhaps even more than half of them are the sort of light reading that once upon a time would have been dismissed by more serious readers as pulp fiction. Somehow, reading literally anything these days makes me some super intellectual.

Whatever. I just like stories. Some of them are acclaimed as great reads. Some of them have been self published on the Kindle store and I feel like one of the only people who read it. No matter, I like them all!

For clarity's sake: Donald J. Trump is an insurrectionist. It actually feels great to say it. Give it a try. And consequent to his actions, according to section 3 of the 14th amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America, he should never be allowed to run for ANY public office in the USA ever again. Think how lovely it would be to never see his face, to never read a quote, to never again wonder what fresh hell he was trying to unleash on the world.

people who voted for him are afraid of calling him a traitor and insurrectionist, because that will force them to face the depth of their error.. and if there's one thing a Trumper won't do, it's face reality or the truth..

AnneBonny , to Technology in Electric Cars Are Already Upending America | After years of promise, a massive shift is under way

In the EV age, cars are no longer just cars. They are computers.

oh no

Stripping out a gas engine, transmission, and 100-plus moving parts turns a vehicle into something more digital than analog—sort of like how typing on an iPhone keyboard is different than on my clackety old Samsung flip phone.

stop

“It’s the software that is really the heart of an EV,” DeGraff said—it runs the motors, calculates how many miles are left on a charge, optimizes the brakes, and much more.

stop, please

Just like with other gadgets that bug you about software updates, all of this firmware can be updated over Wi-Fi while a car charges overnight.

Its all the worst parts of owning an EV.

Seriously, give me a mostly-dumb EV and I'm happy as a clam. The best parts of an EV are not the software (those are some of the worst).

You're agreeing with the rich people in this case when you say that. They got none of those things in this case. They're being taxed on money they could theoretically get.

Chais , to Hacker News in Why Are So Many Dogs on Prozac?
@Chais@sh.itjust.works avatar

I mean, our cat is on Prozac. You might attribute that to her previous family declawing her front paws, then dropping her off at the SPCA after she developed litter box problems.
Because, you know, amputating her first digits on two paws might be sorta painful and make weird to walk around like you're used to. And then they abandon you. I kinda understand there might be some anxiety.
