optimizes efficiency in our browser-centric digital routines, eliminating manual startup delays and facilitating immediate web access

This sounds so much like AI generated text. I don't need "browser-centric digital routines" to benefit from faster launch times.

optimizes efficiency in our browser-centric digital routines, eliminating manual startup delays and facilitating immediate web access

I wish that would translate to "just opening the fucking web browser and not auto updating first". Every time I try to fire up FF on my laptop it wants to update first. I just want to check something really quickly. Update on close, not on open.

drspod , to Firefox in Firefox 126.0.1 release notes

Fixed issues with drag-and-drop functionality on Linux. (Bug 1897115)

For anyone that has to wait for their distro package manager before they get this update, here is a workaround for the most annoying bug (losing the ability to drag/re-order tabs in Firefox):

If the bug is present, you will find that drag-and-drop functionality has seized working in Firefox and it is not possible to select and drag drop images, texts, URLs, tabs etc.

4 Either restart Firefox or do the following to restore drag-and-drop functionality:

a Open another application like a text editor.

b Enter some random text, select it en drag it unto the URL-bar area in Firefox.

This will cause Firefox to try and open the selected text as if it were a URL.

c After this, try step 1 again to see if drag-and-drop functionality has returned.

Apparmor strikes again.... Completely unnecessary on home Linux systems.

strcrssd , to Firefox in Now Built in to Firefox | Add Text and Drawings to PDFs with Firefox PDF Editor

But why? There's no need for a PDF editor in a browser. This is just raising the size and lowering the performance of a browser for a feature that almost no one needs or wants.

Mozilla should probably build a PDF viewer/editor (Adobe sucks and Foxit has gone downhill in recent years), but it's not part of Firefox.

@hanrahan@slrpnk.net avatar

I agree, this is juat bloat. Super useful .to have the utility but in a browser ffs ? Just have an app people can download that you can do it with, I'd for sure use it. They don't even have native grouped tabs yet, something that a browser should do so start focusing in browser improvement.

The second they start sticking AI bloat in Firefox, I'm out.

why, when it can actually be helpful? Using chatgpt for searches is already much faster than denying 10 cookie banners. Some more privacy focused AI would be great, if firefox does that.

Kichae ,

Using chatgpt for searches

I cannot stress this enough: LLMs are not, have never been, and quite likely never will be search engines. You may as well ask your a auto-complete questions.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

They are better than search engines. I can ask anything and get a good answer in a second, without having to search the web.

Timwi ,
@Timwi@kbin.social avatar

This is a dangerous attitude. You're blindly trusting everything the LLM says. You will be susceptible to misinformation.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I mainly use it for finding tech related things, like helping with code and such.

Timwi ,
@Timwi@kbin.social avatar

I figured, but this thread wasn't specifically about helping with code. It was about replacing search engines. Common uses of search engines include finding information about ongoing events, e.g. the COVID pandemic or an upcoming election. Your comment implied that you thought this information is better obtained from ChatGPT than from Google.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Well I use Kagi but sure, for ongoing events a search engine is the only way currently since chat gpt won't have the latest events. :)

I expect that to change though, and we will all use chat bots instead of search engines in the future.

Really feels like it's in maintenence mode sometimes, but some releases have had very cool features.

ech ,

"Maintenance mode" is fine by me. The constant insistence to change things up for no reason other than to make "progress" is so frustrating as a user. If it works fine, there's no need to push for constant changes.

Audacity9961 ,

This is a point release, what do you expect?

Firefox now ships with a new .deb package for Linux users on Ubuntu, Debian, and Linux Mint.

Did they go back on Snap?

Vincent ,

The Snap is by Ubuntu (and presumably will still be the way Firefox is installed by default on Ubuntu). I think that this is for people who'd prefer not to use the Snap, allowing them to install the .deb directly from the source.

Wow. Awesome changes on firefox android. Well going firefox.

beta_tester ,

What has changed on android? Android isn't mentioned in that post

0xCAFE ,

It's not in the linked article, but it was part of it in the beta release notes. Now it's on the dedicated Android release notes page (https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/android/122.0/releasenotes/):

  • Firefox for Android can now be set as the default PDF reader.
  • Firefox for Android now supports enabling Global Privacy Control. With this feature, Firefox informs websites that the user doesn’t want their data to be shared or sold. This feature is enabled by default in private browsing mode and can be enabled in normal browsing in Settings → Enhanced Tracking Protection -> Tell websites not to share & sell data toggle.
  • To reduce user fingerprinting information and the risk of some website compatibility issues, the OS version is now always reported as "Android 10" in Firefox for Android's User-Agent string.
