Mask bans will not stop crime. Mask bans will not stop protests. What mask bans will do is put people's health at greater risk, and make society less accessible.

@luckytran I suspect that making protesting less safe and, by extension, spending time with those protesting less safe is a feature, rather than a bug, for mask banners.

Boeing's outgoing CEO could get a "golden parachute" worth as much as $45 million.

The CEO before him got one worth $62 million on his way out the door in 2019.

America has socialism for the rich, harsh capitalism for everyone else.

@rbreich I think that's just capitalism. Wealth inequality and a two-tier system is built into the model.

It's not socialism if it only applies to the owner class.

PSA: All billionaires under 30 — each and every one of them — have inherited their wealth.

“Self-made billionaires” are a myth.

@rbreich Billionaires shouldn't exist, I agree.

Is this saying that Mark Zuckerberg inherited his wealth (became a billionaire in mid-20s)?

Or is this saying that, at this moment in 2024, any billionaire who is currently under 30 has inherited their wealth.

If the latter, it's cherry-picking, and there are plenty of ways to explain why billionaires are problematic which are more intellectually rigorous.

The 13th Amendment to the US Constitution explicitly permits slavery – forced labor without pay – for prisoners.

holy shit TIL, thanks @pluralistic

@dinozombie @pluralistic The Nazis explicitly modeled aspects of their bigoted political systems on US race laws. Some Nazis concluded (early on) that the US laws (many of which remained in place for over a decade after WW2) were too extreme.

“NOTE: We expect the CDC to rescind the 5 day isolation period in the very near future. Once the CDC guidance is updated, employees will no longer be eligible for Covid pay for any period of isolation.”

Employers were ready for the CDC change so they could end sick pay.

@luckytran This is a Town government in New York, no less? How spiteful must one be to do this without even the promise of financial profits?
