I'm impressed that Cory Doctorow's (@pluralistic) critiques of late-stage capitalism have made their way in the minds of so many disparate people.

Here is a YouTuber noticing the shift in value delivery from customers to shareholders & calling it enshittification. Might not be an exact match for the platform/intermediary model of Cory's that specifically calls out middlemen who deliver almost no inherent value, but still it is a significant spread of the concepts.

@virtuous_sloth @pluralistic The other huge issue with bikes (for manufacturers) is they tend to last forever if maintained well and don't go obsolete. A problem for companies under the typical tech-based business model.

Sure components do wear out, but if they try to cheat by making weaker components that need replacement more often, they easily get found out by the bike community talking to each other online. Their solution is to harness the community into a consumerist mindset.

Had kind of a realization tonight, probably obvious to everyone else but… I was thinking about how I’ve said to my son when he’s upset about, say, having to leave a friend or family member he loves being around, that it is hard but good to care about people and that the hurt and sadness are ultimately good because it means you care and love them.

And then I was thinking about why being a caregiver is hard and how we’re taught to avoid the feelings that mean you love and care…

@nathanlovestrees Feelings are feelings, never good to deny them.

At the same time though, I think I have started to see the difference between worrying and being overly attached to someone, vs just caring and looking after them. Its very easy to conflate the two, and come up with a common conception that "worrying" really does mean that you love someone.

Easier said than done. I have a son now, so feeling the attachment building haha. I take it as something to be mindful about not to "fix"

Apple’s Vision Pro is a bad product with an even worse vision for the future of computation.

New sales numbers prove it’s a failure, but more than that it shows the idea of tech’s inevitability is a myth. We have the collective power to stop tech that doesn’t serve us.

It seems very hard to look stupid or wrong in big-tech, at least to the busy masses. There is always some new shinier thing they can dangle to distract away from the last stupid thing, or some updated/new promise of the next thing.

Governments and CEOs tell us not to worry about rising emissions because new technologies will fix it.

On February 18, I’ll be in Auckland to explain why tech won’t save us from the climate crisis. Find out more from Tohatoha: https://www.tohatoha.org.nz/2024/02/event-tech-wont-fix-the-climate-crisis/
