To use the Montreal subway, you tap a paper ticket against the turnstile and it opens. But how does it work? And how can the ticket be so cheap that it's disposable? I opened up the tiny NFC chip inside to find out more... 1/15

th ,
@th@v.st avatar

@kenshirriff is the EEPROM why it is so expensive? OTP Paduak chips are 2.5 cents in 10k quantities, which also includes the package: https://www.lcsc.com/product-detail/Microcontroller-Units-MCUs-MPUs-SOCs_PADAUK-Tech-PMS150C-S08_C129127.html

Please tell me about obscure early digital cameras that I haven’t heard about.

@thomasfuchs have you heard of the Cromenco Cyclops? It uses a decapsulated 1 kilobit DRAM chip as the image sensor and can be built from plans in Popular Electronics (Feb 1975). Here's a selfie at an astounding 32x32 pixels:

… and the stupid wind took my hat. I didn’t even have it on I was holding it worried about the wind — pulled it right out of my hand. How did people live wearing hats all the time!?

Maybe the MTA people have some kind of grabber??

@futurebird your hat looks like the one on the sign!

We’ve cast off lines and put Honolulu to our rudder. Soon we’ll leave Hawaii in our wake as we sail on towards Japan.

th OP ,
@th@v.st avatar

Wore ship and braced around. Now enjoying the quiet moonlight on the last lookout of this night watch.

th OP ,

It’s finally time!

More canvas!

th OP ,
@th@v.st avatar

Even more canvas!

Now with jib boom action.

Sails and shadows.

Swedish furl on the stun sail yard.

And another stun sail day.

th OP ,
@th@v.st avatar

Stun sails as seen from the main mast sky sail yard.

th OP ,
@th@v.st avatar

Going aloft to inspect the sky sail rigging.

th OP ,
@th@v.st avatar

Another beautiful downwind sailing day.

th OP ,
@th@v.st avatar

Are you sure you’re rigging the correct stun sails for the current tack?

th OP ,
@th@v.st avatar

Running downwind means double stun sails.

th OP ,
@th@v.st avatar

Clewed up and furled the main course to unblank the stun sails set on the foremast.

th OP ,
@th@v.st avatar

Despite all that flogging canvas, we’re becalmed below the horse latitudes.

th OP ,
@th@v.st avatar

Almost time to start another evening watch.

th OP ,
@th@v.st avatar

Didn’t have internet for a while so we had to enjoy the beauty of the Pacific Ocean.

th OP ,
@th@v.st avatar

Today started with another beautiful downwind stun sail morning.

th OP ,
@th@v.st avatar

Unfortunately one of the stun sails chaffed against the lower topsail yard and required a new patch.

th OP ,
@th@v.st avatar

Another night watch begins. Haven’t seen any other ships or even airplanes in two weeks.

th OP ,
@th@v.st avatar

Found an unapproved belay technique.

th OP ,
@th@v.st avatar

Sheet and tack.

th OP ,
@th@v.st avatar

After two days of nearly becalmed winds we’ve furled all the sails and are motoring for the first time in several weeks.

th OP ,
@th@v.st avatar

We’ve found the wind, unfurled the canvas and are back sailing on a starboard tack towards Japan.

th OP ,
@th@v.st avatar

Reminder that flags fly forward or sideways when under most points of sail, not streaming backwards like so many paintings.

th OP ,
@th@v.st avatar

Our quiet night watch was interrupted by a boarder.

th OP ,
@th@v.st avatar

With an hour left in our watch the call came to wear ship so it’s been a busy evening

th OP ,
@th@v.st avatar

Koningsdag!

th OP ,
@th@v.st avatar

Saluting time!

th OP ,
@th@v.st avatar

The “stille ocean” can be very peaceful.

th OP ,
@th@v.st avatar

We were becalmed in heavy fog and the night watch felt like sailing on a ghost ship.

Mast with furled sails and white light illuminating heavy fog.
Capstan and lines shrouded in fog.

th OP ,
@th@v.st avatar

Sailing full and by again.

th OP ,
@th@v.st avatar

Striking the dolphins.

th OP ,
@th@v.st avatar

The sails haven’t required much handling the past few watches, so I’ve been spending time working on projects in the bosun store.

th OP ,
@th@v.st avatar

The ship’s carpenter made beautiful butterflies to repair the monkey sheet block.

th OP ,
@th@v.st avatar

Watch out for the striker, dolphins!

th OP ,
@th@v.st avatar

Glad we have modern navigation systems since visibility is close to zero today.

th OP ,
@th@v.st avatar

30 kts wind and 11 kts speed.

th OP ,
@th@v.st avatar

The Jarvis winch is our only modern sail handling gear.

th OP ,
@th@v.st avatar

Life on a starboard tack.

th OP ,
@th@v.st avatar

The heel angle is “only” 20 degrees although it feels like 45.

th OP ,
@th@v.st avatar

Another night watch begins.

th OP ,
@th@v.st avatar

The bioluminescence was unbelievably bright.

th OP ,
@th@v.st avatar

After weeks at see it’s now only a few more hours to Japan. Time to start harbor furling sails we won’t need.
