I guess Safari is the only major browser not owned by an advertising company now?

How can I get that thing to run on Linux?....

spacewizard OP ,

@epidiah Oh yeah, epiphany aka "Gnome Web"! I always think of that as "that thing that is there by default in Gnome until you install a real browser" :)

I'm not going to jump ship from Firefox right now, though, seriously, I've got a LOT invested in Firefox. I use firefox sync to move from computer to computer and keep all my stuff, I use Firefox plugins for different stuff, I dunno. I'm extremely Firefoxy right now....

    @epidiah fuck! Stupid Linux.

    spacewizard ,

    @epidiah I know that these days Mint prompts you to set up TimeShift and back up old versions of the operating system you can restore to. I suppose you've already tried backing up to better days, that way?

    spacewizard ,

    @epidiah well ain't that a revoltin' development.

    spacewizard ,

    @epidiah I'm really unimpressed with Ubuntu for letting that out there in the world. :( They're a Big Important Distribution, and they're pushing kernel updates that blank screens?

    On the other hand, they stopped giving a shit about desktop users long ago.

    (I'm blaming Ubuntu because standard Mint is based on Ubuntu)

    spacewizard ,

    @epidiah The Mint people are distrustful of Ubuntu these days. They're working on an alternative version of Mint that's based on Debian instead of Ubuntu (Linux Mint Debian Edition) in case they eventually decide they need to just give up on Ubuntu.

    Unfortunately there's not really any possible direct upgrade path from the one to the other. :(

    Okay.

    FINE.

    CSS is fun when it works with you.

    Whatever.

    spacewizard ,

    @epidiah I did a thing recently where I wrote up a little something in Markdown, like you do, and I wanted it to be a PDF. I ran it through an HTML-izer so I could then convert it to a PDF, and the HTML looked like shit and so the PDF would look like shit. I eventually just opened up LibreOffice and made it look OK via WYSIWYG.

    But if I was a CSS wizard I bet I could have dropped in a few lines of CSS and made that HTML (and PDF) look gorgeous!

    But I'm not

    spacewizard ,

    @epidiah check out the sites "better motherfucking website" "even better motherfucking website" (I apparently am not allowed to look at those at work so you'll have to google them up).... they have a few lines of CSS in the head tag and they look good.

    Next level "supply chain attack" - post a lot of subtly compromised code on github, let Microsoft train copilot on it, wait for developers around the world to cut and paste the compromised code in their own projects.

    @epidiah ..... I don't know, man. I understand the attraction. But I'm skeptical about gratuitously turning html into something that isn't html. I'd rather let hypertext be hypertext than deal with it as a parsed abstract syntax tree in some programming language.

    Reminds me of haml, which also represented HTML in terms of a data structure (in this case, a yaml like one). all the rage in days when rails was the hippest thing in town. Now just seems like "why did we do that".

    spacewizard ,

    @epidiah apologies for the yum yucking, I do understand the yum though, it's valid, and the yucking is just a bit of "old man yells at cloud."

    spacewizard ,

    @epidiah well, I'm not the best at it either. It might be some influence from the htmx propaganda machine to treat htm(x|l) with respect! And as a first class citizen and not just an implementation detail... but arguments can certainly be made for bringing everything into one place and when that place is lispy, maybe that's even more of an inducement to do so.

    @epidiah THAT'S EXACTLY WHERE I AM. I need a course that happens to cover only the things I happen not to know already.

    spacewizard ,

    @epidiah do you do much with the browser's developer tools? Specifically the inspector and the tabs that analyze/display styles? They can often answer questions like "why was this text ever centered in the first place." They're not super easy to understand or deal with IMHO but they are where the answers are.

    spacewizard ,

    @epidiah CSS understanders are wizards.

    #DnD magic-users cast a spell & forget it. Folks like to point at this and say that makes D&D's magic Vancian.

    This bugs me for many reasons I don't care to enumerate. I encourage you to read some Jack Vance if want to know more. It's all in books.

    While this cast and forget quality is a delightful constraint in Vance's fiction, it's an awkward trope in D&D's pastiche. The latter does not feel like the former. So I'd like to humbly propose a new term for D&D's version: Regexian.

    Hear me out!

    spacewizard ,

    @epidiah searches finds I'd never heard that story!

    spacewizard ,

    @epidiah they should have done s/\bmage/wizard/. (Wait.... then magenta objects might become "wizardnta"... I guess s/\bmage\b/wizard/... then you miss plurals... You can probably get around that with lookaheads or something but I never cared enough to learn about those, so just do s/\bmage\b/wizard/ and s/\bmages\b/wizards/ and be done with it. Maybe two more to handle capital M/W. I dunno.

    s/\bmage(s?)\b/wizard\1/ with a backreference? I'm not sure how to match capitalization though.

    Tutorial: This is remarkably easy to do. The first step is to install this distro of Linux in a virtual container...

    Eppy, slowly backing away: I'm sorry. I, uh, made a wrong turn. Like, in life. I think maybe I was meant to be the outdoorsy type? You know, chopping wood and foraging for Fritos. That sort of thing. But good luck with whole (vaguely waves his arm around) technology thing. I hope it works out for you. Hope those virtual containers really set you up on Easy Street.

    Interesting.

    So you're telling me that if someone bought the bundle of all 11 issues of Worlds Without Master—which includes issue 3, the one with Swords Without Master in it—today, then I'd be able to get a new journal before I completely fill up my current one?

    That's got a nice sense of dramatic tension to it.
