Omg any day now computers will be able to add

skaphle ,

@ElleGray You kind of have to appreciate how single-minded researchers must have seen this problem. LLMs learn with data, so let's teach them math with data. And one day, it will almost work perfectly.

I wonder what's stopping LLM researchers from connecting their LLM to tools. It can't be that hard to mix it with a "math detection", right? Make an LLM that translates text into math formulas, then have that use a math program, then output the result. WolframAlpha did that years ago without AI

The 'real' #polls in the #US presidential race are pretty meaningless, so why not a #Mastodon #poll?
Here's the question - Will Donald #Trump be elected president of the #UnitedStates in November? (Clearly he should not be elected to any office, or even allowed on the ballot, but that's not the question)

skaphle ,

@ariadne Why do you think real polls are less meaningful than on Mastodon? What is "meaning" to you? From a statistical POV that doesn't make sense

skaphle ,

@ariadne Are you telling me that none of the professional institutes come close to statistical representative results? And as a consequence you think you can rely more on the opinion of your social media bubble?

skaphle ,

@ariadne Ah now I understand. Sorry. Real polls don't work so it doesn't matter if mastodon polls are not representative. Makes sense.

The pre-eminent philosopher (and recently deceased) Daniel Dennett stated recently that "Large Language Models #LLM are the most dangerous technology ever developed, capable of leading to the collapse of not just #democracy but of #civilization ... This technology can flood the world with manipulative fake people ... Who controls your attention, controls you. We are in danger of losing our free will and being turned into puppets."

Do you agree with Dennett?

@ariadne The most dangerous technology is the steam engine, and it's not only "capable" of collapse of #civilization but that is the path we are currently on. People are manipulated about that fact, their attention diverted, and we actively try to avoid confronting it. All without #LLM|s or #AI. I condemn tech bros who are fascinated with future doom while ignoring what is happening right now.

Between 2016 and 2022, #China, through #coal burning, was responsible for 25.79% of global #CO2 emissions. (And another 3.21% from cement manufacture). Even looked at historically (between 1854 and 2022), Chinese coal is responsible for 14% of global CO2 emissions over this 168 year period.

Is this a problem?

skaphle ,

@ariadne It's complicated because

a) I'm not sure bollocks is unambiguous in this context and

b) colonialism is a huge part of the problem. Many of the historical emissions were caused by the production of goods that were consumed in developed nations, often outsourced by US American and European companies. Money and products for the West, work and pollution for China.

Nevertheless it is a huge problem. I think the only path is to reduce emissions here and enforce supply chain calculations.

We really need to stop buying into the argument that are "radical" or "destructive". The opposite is true: the nature of the protests have been peaceful and, on the whole, pretty tame.

The idea that, say, sitting on a road is "radical", "extreme" and "criminal" came from a bunch of aligned think tanks, parroted by the media.
Reject them.

The framing needs to be: Fossil fuel companies are radical, extreme, criminal.
