THREAD

REPEAT: To the @DNC @JoeBiden @BidenHQ—DO NOT ONLY make this about ONE MAN. You must ALSO make this about THE WHOLE REPUBLICAN PARTY and their AUTHORITARIANISM. The Supreme Court, these GOP state legislatures—ALL OF IT. I know you are institutionalists but the GOP MUST GO!

popcornreel OP ,
@popcornreel@mas.to avatar

As I’ve said before: @JoeBiden and @DNC must run against the ENTIRE REPUBLICAN PARTY, not only Orange Thug. It is not only one person in GOP-controlled state legislatures who is doing damage to people in those states and courts—it’s an entire Republican Party in those places.

popcornreel OP ,
@popcornreel@mas.to avatar

FDR and President Truman often gave speeches against the entire Republican Party and its establishment. They made no bones about who caused damage to people across America. They didn’t limit their speeches to one opponent. They attacked the ENTIRE Republican Party for its evils.

How refreshing it would be for news networks to actually have in-depth, intelligent and sensitive conversations about misogynistic societies, sexual assault, rape and all other violence against any woman and a man’s role and responsibilities to be better—instead of trivializing...

Re: Stormy Daniels—Yes, there was “slut shaming” (a term I despise—in part because the implication is that SD or ANY woman similarly situated is a slut, which is insulting enough)—AND I think what happened in court goes far, far deeper. Goes to patriarchy, values and systems.

popcornreel OP ,
@popcornreel@mas.to avatar

Age (western cultures, especially US, UK are ageist) played a role in Orange Thug’s (OT) trial this week. Or it may be a generational(?): An older woman on TV (Carol Leonnig) opined on “how painful” it was for OT to hear (younger) Stormy testify (what I think was rape) w/o reply.

popcornreel OP ,
@popcornreel@mas.to avatar

I doubt that if a 20 or 30-something woman was a TV pundit you’d ever hear them say “how painful” it was for 77-yr old Orange Thug to have to hear 30-something Stormy Daniels testify about what to me was absolutely rape. You’d never hear that from a 30yr old woman not on Fox

Age played a different role in the courtroom—you had veteran attorney Susan Necheles essentially as the patriarchal battering ram against a younger Stormy Daniels. Class issues came in, but my focus is age and GENDER. A 1950s attack on women, whether via pundits, lawyers or LAWS.

There was a day where you had some women (usually but not always older and sometimes monied) defend male violence (because that is what this is: MALE VIOLENCE) either by voting for it by proxy (see Orange T) or by dismissing ANY violated woman who fought back in court as a “slut”

popcornreel OP ,
@popcornreel@mas.to avatar

Susan Necheles cross x of Stormy Daniels (SD by all accounts made SN look a pittance) reminded me of when Republican senators got older white female attorney to q Dr Christine Blasey Ford in 2018 (re Kavanaugh). Illusion of “go easy”—when all it did was emphasize patriarchy more!

popcornreel OP ,
@popcornreel@mas.to avatar

Bottom line is that the conversations must be far more fulsome, in-depth. They deliberately aren’t. The language that many of us, male or female (whether on TV or not) are using (and I definitely always include myself in this) is often sloppy, harmful, malicious and ill-advised.

popcornreel OP ,
@popcornreel@mas.to avatar

For all the time pundits and news folks spend in this opinion journalism world of news talking about Orange Thug—news programs would do well to actually talk seriously about the ISSUES of violence against women. And of MEN needing to be FAR BETTER. Much work and education needed.

popcornreel OP ,
@popcornreel@mas.to avatar

One of the other most problematic aspects is when violence against women (rape and other violence) is discussed at all it is done within a very narrow framework, and in between commercials on TV if at all. The conversations do not usually include SURVIVORS (as far as is known)

popcornreel OP ,
@popcornreel@mas.to avatar

Whether it’s Halle Berry assaulted by Adrien Brody live at the Oscars in 2003 or Jimmy Savile doing likewise to a woman on “Top Of The Pops” or Orange Thug “taking advantage” (aka RAPE) of Stormy Daniels—how these horrors are discussed is a disgrace and disservice to ALL of us.

Since the 1960s I cannot think of another solo artist who had five consecutive excellent albums.

I can think only of Stevie Wonder—a true genius and Afrocentric humanist.

1972–Music Of My Mind
1972-Talking Book
1973-Innervisions
1974-Fufillingness’ First Finale
1976-Songs In The Key Of Life

@JoBlakely Back then those songs and albums stuck to me like glue. And they still do to this day, even more so. Stevie was phenomenal in that era. And as you said, the music was so meaningful. And despite having a vast music collection I still end up playing the Seventies Stevie Era more often than most (except jazz).

And now, for a series of seemingly unrelated posts (maybe four of them) to follow.

We have a culture that says voting is not sexy but reposts, likes and trainwreck adulation are.

To put it somewhat cryptically: What is the focus? Our focus? And whose focus? What is an average person’s daily focus? Family? Changing the world? “Surviving”? Thriving? Educating?

REMEMBER: As repugnant as Orange Criminal is, he’s the shiny object/distraction. It is the people behind (or in front of) the scenes—the Steve Bannons, Stephen Millers etc—who are truly dangerous. These are the people strategizing for camps, martial law, deportations etc. WAKE UP
