I'm a mathematician at UNAM in Mexico City. I work in algebraic topology, homotopy theory and higher category theory, but am interested in all sorts of math.

I also enjoy computer programming as a hobby and am a big fan of the text editor Emacs.

New Spanish pun: La ninfa de roble

@rms Could you please explain the pun? I'm a native Spanish speaker and don't get it. I'm Mexican and Spanish varies from country to country, so I asked on a Spanish-language Emacs group with people from many different Spanish-speaking countries but people didn't get it there either.

Alex Jones was born in 1974... He's... so much younger than I thought! I thought he was two decades older than me but it's less than one.

Some things age you, I suppose.

(ETA: a photo... he's not just "gen X" he's a late gen Xer. borderline Millennial. )

(ETA 2: He made a lot of his fortune, which he isn't paying out to the victims of his attacks... selling HEALTH PILLS. They obviously don't work!)

@futurebird That's surprising, I also thought he was older!

Off-topic: I don't think I've seen ETA used this way before. What does it mean here? (I'm used to it meaning "estimated time of arrival").

@futurebird Ah, makes sense. Thanks!

Someone on tumblr posted this survey to get the math people all riled up and I think it's working.

@futurebird Wow! All the classics together in one survey! I'm not surprised it riles people up.

@futurebird Well, in those people's defense: where else would a function be continuous other than on its domain?

When you hear "Tri-State Area" what do you think of?

oantolin ,
@oantolin@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@futurebird Texas, New Mexico and Chihuahua (Mexico). I used to live in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua which is right across the border from El Paso, Texas and have a vague recollection of the El Paso weather report using the phrase "tri-state area" to refer to those three states.

I have this memory of drinking frozen OJ growing up. It came in a little paper cylinder, and you put it in a pitcher and added water then stirred and it was orange juice. There was apple juice too...

Is that a thing anymore? What the heck was the frozen juice thing about. I can't even find it anymore.

@futurebird I seem to recall reading that advances in pasteurization techniques improved the flavor of pasteurized orange juice to the point that frozen concentrated orange juice became obsolete. I remember frozen OJ from my childhood too.
