Moving to my own instance has really shown the weakness in Mastodon:

  • replies are not always shown
  • it's impossible to look at someone's posts from their profile

I get why this happens from the distributed nature of the protocol but it's still awful from a user experience perspective

@ben user experience really shakes. There are some external tools like the FediFetcher that try to resolve some issues. Personally, I like to regularly run FediFetcher to get missing replies and posts onto my instance from people that I follow

@ben You can still run FediFetcher, it is more like a 3rd party app you set up that goes through the posts and profiles you follow and fetches missing replies from the original pages

@ben those first two still serve a good purpose though, my grandpa for example has very bad eyesight and profits a lot from his voice assistant. And VR, at least with a lot of anxious people, helped a lot connecting and socialising (and especially furries getting to feel more comfortable in their virtual skin) The others though absolutely.

    I've just learned that Doom on the SNES used precomputed lookup tables to compute trigonometry functions because the processor was to weak to compute them in real time. I wonder if modern games couldn't use that trick to eek out a bit more performance.

    @BeAware @eliocamp always depends. Especially for huge bodies that all need to calculate something like that I can bet it will have a big improvement.
