Maybe we need to make some space to have conversations about the way that rigid gender expectations can hurt people. I'm not talking about trans people, exclusively (in fact the trans people I know are among the most sophisticated when it comes to processing these kinds of events and emotions)

No, where I see a lot of unprocessed trauma flailing around putting everyone in a bad way is from cis people who have unexamined psychological harm due to their failure to conform to some gender norm. 1/

@futurebird @justafrog Huh, really? I didn't know that! I guess not being able to see musicians in orchestras and such never let me be aware of this. Is there some pattern to it?

If you think that treads is an existential threat to the fediverse because of EEE and yet you think a mass-blocking campaign will do anything to move the needle there, I have some shares of a bridge to sell you.

Lovely bridge, overlooks the ocean, located in Colorado.

This isn't to say that you should federate with threads. I don't care and you may have very good reasons to defederate from them or even encourage a mass-block campaign.

Let's just not kid ourselves that it will slow down EEE.

modulux ,

@hrefna So you're saying any EEE attempt is bound to succeed, so we shouldn't even try? sounds a bit defeatist. It might be true, but it's still worth the try, I think. (This aside from the other reasons to block.)

modulux ,

@hrefna @thunderfist Thanks for the clarification. I admit I'm not sure I understand why. As you say I definitely see other EEE issues you point out (new clients or servers that do more, have or are perceived to have better UX or scalability, etc). But a lot of the issues with twisting the spec or (mis)behaving differently and forcing others to comply are related to federating with them, no?

Also my apologies if this reply is annoying. I'm not good at calibrating when replies are wanted or not.

One of my takeaways: it is not widely understood what is required for federation that is not in the spec

To federate with other AP instances requires consensus on:

  • How to post and load posts (http signatures, not in the spec)
  • Account lookups (eg, webfinger)
  • What the meaning of a "note" is (overloaded term)
  • How to interpret collections and navigate them (not in the spec, or rather it's in the spec but is so broad as to not be useful)
  • Reply flows
  • JSON-LD

etc

@hrefna They're going to put http signatures on the spec, no? At least that's what I heard.

"This violates the GDPR"

"This is a violation of copyright"

"This is a violation of the DMA"

These are not magic things that say whatever you want them to. They are laws (or sets of laws) with specific clauses and requirements.

They are in some cases powerful tools for giving you rights and protecting your data, but

  1. They don't say what you want them to just because you want them to

  2. You very likely don't want to have a conversation about GDPR and mastodon

modulux ,

@hrefna If this is about bridges, they do say enough. Specifically, there is no lawful basis of processing (art 6). Is this a wider problem on the fedi? Depends on sign-up flows and whether consent is sought and for what.
