I have a craving for vampire novels that don’t take themselves too seriously - any recommendations? Currently reading Odd Blood and enjoying it so far.

I finished Olivia Atwater’s The Witchwood Knot this evening and it was just very delightful to be back within her magical human faerie world again. I’m pleased there will be more books in this series.

I’ve been enjoying a lot of faerie / fae / fair folk books lately - another one was heather fawcett’s emily wilde's encyclopaedia of faeries.

I wonder if anyone has any other recommendations in that zone @bookstodon #bookstadon

@wendypalmer @bookstodon k read that one before I really had a handle on faerie stuff and didn’t like it much, but it might be time to give it another try now that I know a bit more about the mythology of that world

@bookstodon Hey, I love me some Penguin Random House as much as the next reader, but I'm also interested in the indies, which are usually more daring than the Big Five.

I finished the very Ontario Meet Me by the Lake by Carley Fortune and I enjoyed it quite a bit.

I don’t always listen to Canada Reads, but I try to pick up a few books off the list every year just to get me out of my usual circuit of speculative/sci-fi, fantasy, closed-door yearning romance novels, and whatever non-depressing queer darling has come out that year. Sometimes there is an overlap. Sometimes not.

This was the first CR book of the year.

Next I’m planning on picking up Denison Avenue (a vastly different novel, but still very Toronto - which is an interesting choice for a former Calgary mayor (naheed nenshi) but admittedly I don’t know much about him)

Does anyone have sci-fi book suggestions that are more sci-fi utopia and world building?

I have grown up on sci-fi dystopia and I love it but since we're currently living in one I want to read something uplifting. Collection of short stories would be awesome too!

Please and thank you!

Craft Project! I have a beloved Kobo Libra H2O. It has a proprietary case covered in a blue fake leather that began to flake. I took it off and for a while went with the cloth underneath. But that was beginning to fray and so I decided to fix it with my ninja bookmaking skills. Probably should have used a thinner cloth for the magnet but it looks beautiful!

A red ebook cover opened up on its back with a vintage pattern laid flat on a cutting mat with grid lines.
A dirty closed fabric-covered ereader case on a textured fabric surface.

Finished The Deep Sky by Yume Kitasei tonight.

I felt like there were parts of this book I endured, and parts I enjoyed.

I don’t hate that there were shitty imperfect people in the story, and that the main character was so uncertain and eager to please that it was both secondhand embarrassing and painfully relatable. I also liked the over arching premise of the story.

Did I need to read another book about the dismal future of the planet? Probably not - but I did it anyway. @bookstodon

Book jackets should say less.

@jillrhudy @bookstodon I honestly try to avoid detailed reviews and book jackets when a book catches my eye, they really say too much!!!
