scary lawyerguy:

Of the many double standards employed by the media, Biden needing every speech to be some combination of Lincoln and Cicero while Trump's public appearances are 90 minutes of word salad, non sequiturs, and dictatorial musings that get no push back, is among the worst.

mastodonmigration ,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

This is such a smart take. If Biden put on foot wrong they will be all over him, meanwhile Trump is a raving lunatic and the ignore his daily meltdowns and 'summarize' his nonsense adding coherence to it.

This is BS. Did you watch the State of the Union? Biden is a superb public speaker. He stumbles over words occasionally stemming from a mild stutter, but the substance of his speeches is solid and the policies he advocates are substantive. There is no comparison.

Tomorrow in the Trump election fraud trial, Cohen's cross examination will conclude. The usual suspects on TV will offer their hot takes as to whether the defense 'scored points' or 'dirtied up Cohen' successfully.

Let's try to stay focused on the facts, not some kind of sports coverage analogy.

Bottom line is going to be, did Trump approve "grossing up" Cohen's payment, thereby commiting fraud, as shown in this piece of hard evidence, the Cohen bank statement with Weisseberg's notes?

mastodonmigration OP ,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

Continued...

And, did he do it in order to hide the payment so as to get elected president.

These are the facts that the defense has to create reasonable doubt about.

Hi, Fediverse:

Whew. I finished this week's blog post. Do your thing, Mastodon.

https://terikanefield.com/beware-the-lawyers-follow-up/

It's a follow up from last week, answering some of the questions and comments I got.

In response to people telling me that I am overestimating the ability of people to decode legal news, I attempt to prove this hypothesis:

If people stop listening to legal pundits speculating, they wouldn’t feel confused and they wouldn’t think they need help from lawyers decoding the news.

Definitely some astro tech bro attitude:

"Up until now, there's only been, you know, one group that would ever touch Hubble. And I think that they have an opinion of whether — of who should or shouldn't be allowed to touch it," Isaacman said. "I think a lot would say, 'I'd rather it burn up' than, you know, go down a slippery slope of, you know, the space community growing. So I think that's a factor now, unfortunately."

So now SpaceX, with no working spacesuit, and years behind on it's multi-billion dollar moon lander, is lobbying NASA to go to the Hubble Space Telescope.

"A successful private mission could improve Hubble's ability to point at celestial objects and, by boosting its orbit, extend its life by years... however, an accident could leave the multibillion-dollar telescope broken — or, even more tragically, tethered to the dead bodies of the astronauts sent to repair it."

mastodonmigration OP , (edited )
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

In summary, Jared Isaacman, a rich "private astronaut", wants to go to Hubble which is working fine, but will 'only' work for another 10 years, do some small repairs and boost the telescope's orbit.. He says he will pay for the mission himself. SpaceX would be used. Problems are SpaceX has no experience with this kind of thing and does not have a lot of the technology needed, including a tested spacesuit.

Read the article. Do we want to trust one of our nation asset crown jewels to these guys?

mastodonmigration OP ,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@ivrezul

This is not correct at all. Hubble is still a wonderful asset that is in constant use.

Starlink is killing Hubble

Something about this plan to move Hubble, didn't make sense. If the space telescope still has 10 years of useful life, why this risky SpaceX mission to boost it's orbit now?

Well it turns out the main thing threatening the utility of Hubble is... wait for it... SpaceX Starlink satellites, which orbit just above Hubble constantly "photo-bombing" the images. Within a few years there will be so many Starlinks that Hubble will be useless.

mastodonmigration OP ,

@benjaminherrin @siracusa

Your inexpert opinion on these matters directly contradicts that of the professional astronomy and climate science communities, so perhaps it would be a good idea to do some research into the matter before misinforming people on social media.

Further, it is true that Starlink affords some benefits, what is at issue is at what cost?

mastodonmigration OP ,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@benjaminherrin @siracusa

Space nerd does not equal professional astronomer. It would be helpful to your arguement to cite some experts in the field who say that satellite tracks are not a problem for their work, and that another ten fold increase is such interference is something manageable.

mastodonmigration OP ,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@benjaminherrin

Did you read these articles, or just go by the headline. Both discuss the problem and imperfect/difficult ways to reduce the impact of the problem. Particularly severe is the impact on Vera Rubin.

More discussion of the problem here:https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/satellite-constellations-are-an-existential-threat-for-astronomy/

Glad that there are people working to salvage something from these corrupted images, but to claim there are professional astronomers saying it is not a problem is false.

I don’t really use Twitter anymore, I have a burner that I just use for sports and weather and news and never post from. But every time I open it, I have to question my sanity.
I just read an article about how there is an ice cream that is designed to, and I am not making this up, “taste like your grandma”
I subsequently read another article about how the New York Knicks won an NBA playoff game because someone let out “an epic fart”
These are real things. You can look them up.
Are people just getting more insane? Should I double up on my meds?
