It’s certainly not a waste of time, but it’s definitely overrated. Yeah, I said it! Bring it on nerds!

@Tim_Eagon finally someone talking sense about Fury Road!

I'm not much of a wine guy (more of a whiskey and gin guy), so correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to me that Merlot is the winiest of wines.

@BrianBinh right at this moment I'm drinking a Carménère, which is pretty wine-y. Also not a grape I'd heard of until today.

I have finished reading God Emperor of Dune. It ended exactly as it must, but I’m still not certain what to think of it. So far it’s my least favorite book, mostly because of the homophobia.

My recommendation is to probably stop at book 2 or 3.

But I shall forge ahead anyway.

@deinol I think it goes downhill from book one; possibly even before the end of it. I would have loved to have spent far more time in the desert amongst the Fremen. So much world building there that basically goes nowhere.

Aww, my 6-year old son has developed an interest in the Transformers, especially Optimus Prime. I was telling him about the 1986 animated movie and now he wants to watch it. Do I scar him for life?

@Tim_Eagon that was the first movie I ever watched in a cinema; my uncle took me for some reason. And yes, scar me it did. That's a tough call.

I'm really enjoying the Fallout show featuring colorful character actor Walt Goggins, but it reminds me how ridiculous it is that we distinguish between "character actors" and "lead actors".

Why do we have terms for "actor who is good at acting" and "actor who looks good in front of a camera"? It's like having separate terms for "plumbers who are really good with pipes" and "plumbers who have really professional-looking business cards and vans with a neat logo on the side".

luxet ,
@luxet@dice.camp avatar

@BrianBinh to be fair, that would actually be a really useful distinction when it came to plumbers. You'd need a third category, though: plumbers who are good at rescuing princesses/driving go karts.

I’ve been reading way too many recently published scenarios that feature a perfunctory investigation before the Investigators board a train to creepy town that is a one way exercise in hit point and SAN attrition. Sure, some of the imagery is very creepy, but something is definitely missing, that being real problem solving and meaningful choices.

@lextenebris @Tim_Eagon I'm not sure about this re clues, though I admit I'm coming from a DnD not CoC background; but at the moment I'm running The Halls of the Toymaker for my group, which, though not lovecraftian, certainly has similar suspense/horror (though I'm not sure horror is quite the right word for either) - and loads of clues dotted around to what 'really' happened/is happening, which are well written enough to be an organic outworking of a little piece of world building. 1/3

luxet ,
@luxet@dice.camp avatar

@lextenebris @Tim_Eagon the players have found some, but not all - from which they will have to piece together their own version of the backstory to inform end of adventure decisions... But they're not driven to find clues to the backstory, they're trying to discover what's going on now... So I'm wondering, from what you've said, is a basic problem with any CoC game the basic assumption that players are investigators? So looking for, rather than incidentally finding clues? 2/3

@luxet@dice.camp avatar

@lextenebris @Tim_Eagon from memory the original Lovecraftian stories often involved protagonists that stumbled onto weird situations, rather than went out looking for them? I don't know how you could start from that premise given the meta situation, but it might be a way to approach things?

luxet ,
@luxet@dice.camp avatar

@Tim_Eagon @chakatfirepaw @lextenebris but keeping the unknown factor - is this minor, or major. I think that would work really well in a full campaign, but has the c danger of falling very flat in a one shot.

What are everyone's favorite boardgames these days? I'm still loving Dominion and Everdell myself though really looking forward to getting the expansion for Merchant's Cove (my kids love that one too!)

luxet ,

@meganpsyd +1 for Everdell, I think that's a top notch beauty of a game.
