@RikerGoogling I write it off as yet another failure in world building that would have been okay had the series stopped after the first one.

    @vampiress You're good people, Elissa.

(Turned down a role with a gambling company myself during a period of unemployment post COVID. Sticking to your ethics can hurt.)

Spent last night introducing a friend of mine who's a bit younger than me to 8-bit computing and gaming. She did shockingly well at Adventure on the 2600, and handing her an Usborne book and a C64 she had an absolute blast coding games.

I genuinely think issuing modern versions of these kind of systems with simple coding languages to all young kids these days would be beneficial in a lot of ways. (And fun for them.)

@vampiress I know it's not quite the same - but this is a huge part of why I love pico-8. It's the closest thing to the joy I remember playing with qbasic as a child - and could really have an equivalent of those usborne books about it

Last night I may have... perhaps... taken my basic Linux From Scratch system and installed Xwindows on it.

And Fluxbox, because nobody needs TWM.

I was fine with just Links but... I feel like I now need a graphical web browser.

Compiling a modern web browser, though? Not easy. Hmmm. What to do...

Also, what other things to add? A text mode IRC client maybe?

As in the other picture, but now with added Fluxbox! My favourite ultra minimalist WM. Multiple windows are open - two terminals, Midnight Commander, and top running.

@vampiress w3m supports graphics in xterm...

But I suspect by pretending that's what you mean by graphical browser, I'm being intentionally obtuse

@vampiress The simultaneous wanting to be able to play games, and increasing shittification of Windows is a non-trivial factor in my finally building a machine again and not having a clue what OS I want to put on it.

@vampiress @geordie I love how they feel like you're piloting tonnes of walking tank: they are slow, lumbering. You've got to think about your movements.

I always get disappointed by mech style games that feel like you're playing a FPS, except you're a fast moving giant.

What should I add to my '90s website?

So I'm currently toying around with NeoCities, and decided to trial it by building your classic mid '90s Geocities/Tripod/Angelfire pastiche website.

Some of the most important elements are already in place.

Tile background? Large font? Heading in bright pink with a shadow? Unusual colour choices? Random cat gifs? Under construction gif? Check! Check! Check!

In the true spirit of the '90s DIY web, some more pages (including the links page) are coming soon.

(I'm thinking of adding a page dedicated to either Britney or a nu-metal band.)

You can see the page so far here: https://that90ssite.neocities.org/

There are a few things that I want to add to make it complete, and I'm looking for suggestions.

The first, is to embed a midi file that plays automatically. Any suggestions on the best way of doing this?

Second, it's just not going to be complete without a guestbook.

    Third, any webring suggestions?

Fourth, what's the best way of adding a java chat room in 2024?

Finally, anything else that really needs to be a part of a great '90s website?

UPDATE: Thanks for all the feedback! I've added more annoying GIFs, a guestbook, a links page, and a cyber cat hangout.

UPDATE 2: And added even more gifs, an amazing Amiga demo, and a ton of links.

@ajsadauskas @linux Image maps? <marquee>? A digital view counter, or one of those gifs of a spinning odometer.
A link that goes to a clip art digger saying 'under construction' in 90s office clip art.

@vampiress @codinghorror I've never seen a real copy! Ours was Completely Legitimate on a single blue floppy that we had with a Toshiba with no HD that no doubt Dad got from somebody at work
