One has got to wonder if encrypted communication would have seen so widespread adoption if law enforcement hadn't been spying on law abiding citizens in the first place.

Somebody explain to me like I'm a difficult 5 year old what kind of tech brain makes major sites waste countless programming hours separately developing web apps for various platforms. Make the responsive website. Wrapping it as a mobile app is trivial. So why the extra work?

There are things you can do in a native app which are hard or impossible to do in a web app.

One example of that is making an app that works without network connectivity.

The term "major sites" is too vague to know what sort of functionality is needed.

The company I am partner in started out with a web app and later introduced native apps in order to provide better functionality. And the key functionality being added in the native app was the ability to work offline.

So the example I gave is just the example I happened to know the best. Other vendors may have different reasons for developing a native app.
