The migration from one database to another went well, though took about an hour longer than I expected. That's just processing time to dump and then reload a 500GB database.

Once it was complete and I tried to start the instance, I kept getting timeouts. It looks like the problem was with the web processes. I spent way too long debugging them. kept timing out. Nothing I did would fix it.

then I looked at the new database server. all 96 cores were pegged. wtf?

restart the database server, goes right back to being pegged. I stop the mastodon processes, and the load falls to zero.

then I wondered.... surely I wouldn't need to run an "analyze" command on a brand new database?

So I try it. kind of at my wits end. and sure enough the load drops to near zero and everything magically starts working.

I wish I could afford more than the $12.37 or whatever you get from me (after fees) each month.
This isn't even your job job and you work harder than most people.

    @pluralistic

    I've read this and Zitron's article and, I must admit, I was still naive.
    It didn't occur to me that the enshittification was 100% on purpose. I thought it was a side-effect of bad choices. I thought they really believed they were doing what was best for the company.
    No. It's on purpose. The company doesn't matter to them. They can go rui?n a new one.
    All that matters is how much money they can make on the way down.

    So desperate for a good night's sleep I took 25 mg of Melatonin. I still woke up after 5 1/2 hours and was awake for an hour before falling back to sleep and doing the sleep for 45 minutes, wake up for 30 minutes dance I do every weekend.

    @BeAware

    I take 75 mg of Benadryl every night, including last night.

    @BeAware

    Benadryl is for allergies and also for sleep.
    I could go back down to 50 mg of Benadryl.
    I also take Zyrtec (not Zyrtec-D).

    What is something you have learned you wish you could have told your younger self... but, you also know your younger self would never believe you?

    Here are mine:

    • Even if you are a smarty pants you still need to study, probably a lot.
    • Brush your teeth twice a day. Not once. TWICE.
    • The few things about your appearance you have (some) control over are not very important in romance.
    • No, you really do need to sleep.
    • Don't just study what's hard & impressive study what fascinates you.

    @futurebird

    For me specifically.

    You are a girl. Not you were supposed to be a girl but you are a girl, right now.
    Young me would have accused future me of being a demon from hell.

    Your gums are not supposed to bleed when you brush your teeth. FLOSS
    I never did. I'm lucky it wasn't until my early 40s that I got full-blown gingivitis.

    You like to write nonsense stuff that nobody else wants to read? Keep writing it. Write for yourself.
    I do not have an audience for which to write. And you don't get an audience worth having by pandering; you get the audience you want by writing your truth.

    You know the computers that you like? You can actually make an entire career out of keeping them safe!
    The fact that your friend's uncle could give you a double-sided floppy with 80 games on it that neither of you paid for wasn't a clue that maybe these things were poorly secured by default?

    It's not your fault. You are not lazy. You are not particularly insubordinate. You are not a horrible human being who is going to hell.
    I'm on the spectrum and have ADHD and I had an abusive alcoholic step-dad so that was not fun.

    Finally,
    Weird Al will still be making music when you are 50 years old and it will still be good, better even.

    You will not be thin forever, child. Learn to enjoy exercising because your metabolism will change.

    I remember being upset that my weight got up to 125 pounds.
    That was 125 pounds ago.

    Plain, cold water tastes good, actually.

    I drank so much soda.
