The strange thing about living in Australia is you're used to terrible, nocturnal screeching things, many of which fly. You're used to spiders as big as your hand, or ignoring one of the 10 most deadly snakes turning up while you're walking around the block. You're used to, on a hike, running into furry things as tall as you hopping around the place while carrying their young in flesh pouches.

But raccoons? That’s so weird. They're real things? For serious? That rummage through your garbage?

@jordan@sometimes.social avatar

@vampiress I'd see them regularly when I lived farther from the city, but I rarely spot them since I moved to and later adjacent to Chicago. I think the coyotes eat them.

My first job out of high school was assembling and repairing PC compatibles for a computer store.

I sometimes think of making a game about that. It starts in the ‘80s with the advent of PC clones. You have to buy the parts, assemble and configure them, and sell them. As time progresses tech gets weirder and faster until you’re installing 3dfx cards etc.

Part retail store sim, part computer repair sim.

I’ll probably never make that game… but it’d be cool.

I really like the Pentium II "Briefcase" form factor.

I liked them when I was assembling computers in the '90s, and I like them now.

    @vampiress I would loan you my dog, who is a specialist in possum murder, but of course our possums are a completely different animal than yours

    jordan ,
    @jordan@sometimes.social avatar

    @vampiress Ours are basically 12 pound tree rats with poison resistance and the ability to feign death. They’re immune to rabies, at least, so you don’t have to worry about that.

    @vampiress Been eyeing up my wife's KAVU mini sling bag and thinking the Steam Deck would fit nicely in there

    jordan ,
    @jordan@sometimes.social avatar

    @vampiress Mmm it just barely fits but it's really wedged into there, no room for a case or a shell or anything. Next size up (4 rope strap instead of 3 rope strap) would definitely fit though.

    jordan ,
    @jordan@sometimes.social avatar

    @vampiress The bigger one would definitely work; the mini is 16 inches, the regular is 20: https://kavu.com/collections/rope-bag-line/products/rope-sling

    (We had one of the bigger ones but someone left it where the dog could get it while it had snacks in it and now we don't have that bag anymore)

    @vampiress Gemini always seemed real gatekeepy to me... like, if you hate shitty webpages you could always just not make shitty webpages

    jordan ,
    @jordan@sometimes.social avatar

    @vampiress I dunno, maybe a market that they won't let anybody in to unless they knew they had to get a special hat first from the special market hat vendor. I feel like anything I would want to publish via Gemini, I'd want to put up on the web as well, and then I have to deal with two markup formats, and anyone who is capable of running a Gemini client is also certainly capable of running a web browser, so why bother with it at all? I'm already making myself inaccessible enough to the "normal" people by being here :P

    jordan ,
    @jordan@sometimes.social avatar

    @vampiress I kinda do think it's a bad thing? I think there's a difference between "I choose to exist in obscure and unpopular places, which anyone could choose to wander into but mostly don't" versus "I'm going to create a technology that is deliberately inaccessible and unappealing to novices and non-technical people." I think that treating computer skills as somehow different or special or more important than other types of knowledge causes a lot of problems; I don't necessarily think that everyone that uses Gemini thinks that way and I don't want to name specific people, but I know that some of the people that are very heavily invested in Gemini are also very heavily invested in that way of thinking, and it taints the whole thing for me.
