Is Dune just a cheap ripoff of Star Wars? No, Dune is a very expensive ripoff of Star Wars. The actual ripoff was cheap. Frank Herbert watched Star Wars on opening night in 1977, then cribbed a bunch of notes, changed the name of the planet Tatooine to Arrakis, changed the name of Luke Skywalker to Paul Atreides, and pretty much left everything else the same. The expensive part was building a time machine so that he could go back in time and publish Dune in 1965, twelve years before Star Wars came out. Frank Herbert spent his entire family fortune building his time machine, and even had to sell his family ranch in California and the family’s stock in General Electric. Most scholars consider it one of the most expensive, if not _the_ most expensive, cases of plagiarism in the 20th century.

    I'm more of a reader than a writer in 'Mastodon Space' but today I bring you something that those people I follow may not have heard of: what's likely to be the first attempt at a space suit, designed as early as 1936 in Spain. It was to be tested with a hot air balloon but unfortunately the whole thing had to be scrapped due to the Civil War. One piece of the original suit has now been found. In Spanish but Google Translate does the trick.

    Orc: The trees are strong, my lord. Their roots go deep. Saruman: Rip them all down. Orc (the words fill up the image): Yeah alright, look, what I’m saying is we’re trying, but it’s not really that easy. We’ve got orcs working 6+ hours overtime a day, hauling down trees with nothing but fucking ropes, with nothing but maggots and mouldy bread to eat. I thought, maybe, since you’re meant to be so fucking wise, you could come up with some kind of actual solution. There are trees here with roots like 50 metres long, those ones are borderline impossible to pull down by hand. You’re supposed to be managing this project but you’ve given us no time frame, no extra equipment, no budget to even come up with something ourselves and you expect everything to just happen. Frankly I think Sauron bet on the wrong horse, you think just cause you’re like a demi-god you’re somehow automatically qualified to supervise a forestry project but obviously you have no fucking clue what you’re doing. I did my Cert. V in forestry management at Mirkwood Technical School and what we really need -
