Fellow shopper: "Oh, I didn't doubt you could manage it. I just thought if you had help it would be easier." Me: "Oh yes. It would be easier. Thank you so much." *humbly accepts help and internalizes this deep, unexpected philosophical lesson Look, this post has been wildly more popular than I thought it deserved, apparently at least in part because "don't burden others; be independent" is far more ingrained in people than I realized. So here's the thing: society works when people help each other. Helping others gives people a chance to know each other, and gives them an investment in the people they help. Helping creates bonds. People enjoy helping, and you are doing a good by letting them help you if they so wish. Offer help; accept help. You will be a part of creating a helping culture. Which, incidentally, weakens capitalism and the fractionation between people that benefits those who would use us.

    immer noch deprimierend, dass das 49-euro-ticket mal ein 9-euro-ticket war und wie schnell wir uns als gesellschaft mit dem »kompromiss« abspeisen lassen haben. jetzt kämpfen wir dafür, dass es bei 49 euro bleibt, statt dass der preis wieder runtergeht.

    i honestly thought i found a (niche) use case for chatgpt that would have helped me a lot. i needed to know if a band used a specific word in any of their songs. i didn’t try to trick chatgpt, i didn’t use complicated phrasing, i straight up asked »are there any lyrics from x featuring the word y?« and it shit the bed so hard. repeatedly. it even tried to cite the paragraph containing the word … without the word showing up.

    if google just allowed me to narrow the results like it does for web searches, it would’ve worked 100% just give me »band:« the same way »site:« is a thing and done.

    more and more search operators would force you to almost learn a language just for using google. but the existance of »prompt engineers« proves that chatbots also can’t deal with natural language. at least proper search engines won’t lie to me.

    also unsuccessfully trying to find out if tool used the word »magic« in any of their songs (don’t ask) just cost microsoft two dollars because i tried a bunch of follow-up questions and different wordings.

    seems sustainable to me. nothing to see here.
