A tight flight connection that I’m surprisingly (after a late takeoff) going to make, but am more skeptical about my bag!

May end up giving my in-person talk on Monday online from my hotel room, wrapped in a bed sheet 🤔

I was reading one of my Japanese graded readers (stories for language learners) on the flight (since even in my 40s, being strapped into a seat is a great homework aid), and I accidentally replied to the flight attendant bringing around food in Japanese.

I may now have started an irrevocable chain of events where I’m not addressed in English again for the whole trip 😨

Afternoon high tea with a Prince of Tennis (Japanese manga/anime) theme! Each cake is based on the tastes of one of the manga characters (from the Rikkai tennis team). There was also a mini-burger. Also, I can no longer move comfortably 😅

A top down view of the cake tray. The logo of the Rikkai school in the anime can be seen printed on the top tray.
The outside of the menu, showing the faces of each of the 9 anime characters.
A life sized poster shows all 9 anime characters standing together, wearing wait staff uniforms.

#EPSC (Europlanet Science Congress) is being held hybrid this year, and has an exciting program that includes a session on using new tools such as #VR in planetary science outreach.

But... it's 50 Euro per abstract submission, with no guarantee of acceptance. That's a fairly big punch when the Japanese yen is super weak.

This week, we're hitting the shop floor for a big design that (I hope) will ultimately become a space for a conference.

So far... it's a doughnut.

Is this to remind attendees that they better getting running around this track to burn off eating too many pastries? We shall see...

From worlds where stars do not twinkle, to lands where you must outrun the sun-rise to survive, "Alien Earths" by Lisa Kaltenegger is packed with truly delicious visuals of what we might find on the surface of an exoplanet.

Kaltenegger gives a personal account of what it's like working at the cutting edge of uncovering the nature of these alien worlds, with many amusing anecdotes such the perils of interdisciplinary work!

My book review is here in Science Magazine 🔗! https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.ado1465

Computer graphics visualisation of a planet seemingly made of glass. The text is an anecdote from "Alien Earths", saying: "When geologists talk about glass, they mean a cooled magma. When astronomers talk about glass, we mean the see-through material that comprises the vessels we pour liquid into. When I called it a 'Cinderella glass-slipper planet' the geologists understood what the astronomers were thinking. A lot of teasing ensued."

My listening is very weak in Japanese, and I feel I need to train my ear to pick out words in Japanese speech, rather than determining it all to be white noise!

I’m trying the obvious tasks of listening to anime, listening exercises etc but I wondered if there was an app with exercises all like this, where you have to fill in the words you hear in a short clip?

(This is from “umi” but only does this exercise occasionally.)

@elizabethtasker yes listening is a part of what's proposed, you get some audio with nothing written and need to choose between 4 proposals (it's not manga style tho, more family restaurant style lol), you also get speaking / reading

but if your goal is just audio, watch the news ;)

Side note: that ze was wild

Because I had a meeting in France before visiting my family in the UK, my main flight home to Tokyo leaves from Paris. I’m therefore taking the Eurostar from London to Paris! I remember the channel tunnel being constructed while i was at school, but this is the first time taking the train 🚂🧜🏾‍♀️🌊

No lie: I’m excited. And I’ve packed a cheese and pickle sandwich 🥪 and a bottle of ginger beer.

I appear to have the stereotypical “Delhi belly” 😑 I have stabbing pains in my stomach which appear reluctant to move either up or down but I think we gotta flush this out somehow, so I’m pro getting a move on!

I’d add a CW for TMI, but this started in earnest yesterday and I’m done with delicacy.
