reader friends, any recommendations for epub sources? my last device was quite some time ago (👇), but i assume Proj. Guttenberg and Internet Archive are still a good place to start?

i was planning to get a kobo clara 2e and just sideload and/or borrow from my extremely awesome library.

are there somewhat ethical places i can buy epubs and support authors of current books?

@dko Certain authors (@pluralistic of note) sell all their books via DRM-free ePub. (And currently has a Humble Bundle of all but his latest for $18!)

Lulu and Smashwords both are good soruces for independent authors. (Only some of Lulu's offerings are ebooks, most are dead-tree-only.)

@dko Just got myself a new e-reader to replace my Amazon-laden old Kindle. First thing I did was load up the @pluralistic library! (And loaded Kiwix to download the entirety of Project Gutenberg, Wikipedia, Wiktionary, MDWiki, Khan Academy, and iFixit to SD card for offline reading so I have my own actual Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. :-D )

@srgower @dko @pluralistic It's a Boox Note Air3C - it's really an Android tablet masquerading as an e-reader.

I got the collection from the Humble Bundle! https://www.humblebundle.com/books/cory-doctorow-novel-collection-tor-books-books

I already had most in dead-tree form, but hey, support EFF & Cory at the same time? I'll buy 'em again. (Plus it was about the same cost as getting the ones I'm missing from Powell's Books.)

    @pluralistic Woo-hoo! Powell's!

    One thing you might be interested in - A local information security meetup ( @rainsec ) happens last-Tuesdays at a pub about two miles away. (Lucky Lab on SE Hawthorne Blvd.) The meetup officially starts at 6:30, ends at 9:30, on the outdoor covered patio behind. If you felt like showing up (presumably after the Powell's event,) pizza and beer would be flowing.
