My dad and I built this butcher block in 1991 or '92, using a 2" thick slab of hardwood (don't remember what sort of tree or how he came to have it). Kept it in my kitchen for years but then moved it outdoors. Zoom in on the moss!

Slab from a tree, about 29" at the widest, mounted on a very sturdy lumber frame. The slab is sadly cracked in places, but beautifully carpeted with moss. It stands at the end of a gravel path in our wee back garden.
