Etiquette proposal: if you invite someone from another to a teleconference, the onus is on you to present all times in their local timezone, rather than your own - that is, the person asking should bear the labor of timezone conversions, not the person being asked.

@pluralistic @kolya You can already solve this with a Doodle poll of your available times. All the recipients will see these times in their own time zone. I work with people all over America (the continent, not the country that stole the name), we usually have meetings with people in 8+ countries, and we send each other these polls pretty frequently, they work fairly well.

Before buying an alleged translation ask yourself (and do the research): does the purpoted translator know the source language?

Before heeding the plaudits of a review of a translation (or of a "translation"), ask yourself (and do the the research): does the reviewer know the source language?

A "translation" by someone who doesn't know the source language is a (perfectly legitimate) retelling by an insecure writer (best case).

A review by someone who doesn't know the source language is only semi-competent as a review.

@Enema_Cowboy @SimonRoyHughes @translators @writingcommunity @writing @reading @bookstodon Hello, I'm a native Spanish speaker who has read the original Don Quixote a few times: it's like it's in a related, but different language (for example, the x now in Spanish makes a completely different sound, so we spell the name Don Quijote). I can understand it, but the reading doesn't flow, it takes extra effort. Similar to you reading, say, Shakespeare.

Technologies that make content available don't have to be monopolized by big tech companies. We can fight back for them.

When you are subject to cruelty, you are prone to fostering cruelty, even if you think you are creating justice.

Some of the digital communication tools we use disembody us to the point that a literal disembodiment goes unnoticed in this story: at work we become only our productivity. Our bodies are irrelevant for most interactions, they matter only for those who actually want to get close.

There can be mastery in being self-referential, in making your characters be overtly explicit in where they (and we are) in your own plot. There is a good, effective way in guiding your readers through a mystery story, without revealing the solution.

Music is not only about notes and rhythm, it is about connection, and there is no deeper connection that the bond you create with the artists, songs and albums that define your youth, that shape you into the human you will be, that make you realize where you want to go in life. There is no greater joy that finding that sound, no greater pain when it sounds out of tune, no better feeling that knowing you've learned how to find a new, different tune to guide you.

Our society, our collective and our self is based on so many things that we take for granted, that if we change one of those things, it ends up being eery, almost a horror story. But even then, there is power in company, humanity can adapt.

Evil comes from wilful ignorance, from treating others' dreams and aspirations as subhuman, and discarding them if they get in the way of your own aspirations and goals.

Not only things can't exist without their opposite (male/female, war/peace/, winter/summer, etc.), opposites aren't fixed values, someone has to think about them and define them.

Fascism comes slowly, but it grabs a hold by strongly categorizing people into well-defined roles and making them lust for the little privileges each rung of the ladder seems to offer, blinding them to the big picture.
