"...I introduce the concept of a moral crumple zone to describe how responsibility for an action may be misattributed to a human actor who had limited control over the behavior of an automated or autonomous system. Just as the crumple zone in a car is designed to absorb the force of impact in a crash, the human in a highly complex and automated system may ... [bear] the brunt of the moral and legal responsibilities when the overall system malfunctions." ---Madeleine Clare Elish

Social media platforms become dead to me when I'm forced to accept I won't find conversations on them. Instagram has been basically dead to me for as long as I've used it. Cohost, Bluesky, Twitter nowadays, and the dice.camp local feed are almost wholly devoid of actual conversations. Sounding off on stuff and hoping for engagement isn't conversational behavior. If it keeps up like this people are going to turn back to in-person socializing. 😱

@PaulCzege or back to forums, which as the name implies, are focused on discussion.

I somehow missed that @molly0xfff wrote a review of Chris Dixon''s crypto propaganda book. That is, until @pluralistic talked about the book & Molly's review.

If I ever write a book about tech, I will make damn sure I ask these two to review it before I publish, because between the two of them, I expect addressing their comments would make any theories or arguments I present much tighter.

And Molly provides citations and references, of course. Excellent read!

@epidiah I had just heard about that book from a @pluralistic review and was thinking about buying it. Glad you liked it. What did you find the most unexpected?

@SymbolicCity Did he enjoy the game when he started taking more risks?

From The Solo Game Master's Guide.

"If you create characters but never use them in a session, that is still experiencing the RPG world. That is part of playing."

This reminds me of all the time I spend generating Traveler characters, the stories that played out in my head as I generated their careers.

Now I want to find a tabletop RPG that focuses on character creation as a story.
