auto sales are down for the second consecutive quarter. This is in the face of lowered prices. It’s made worse because auto sales are seasonal. Q1 is slow. Q2 and Q3 are strong, and Q4 is slow. To see a Q1 to Q2 decline is not good. Its CEO just got a $56B pay package, and diverted AI chips from Tesla to / #X where he spends most of his time earning controversy and polarizing opinions of his brands, including Tesla.

@ivory Just sharing as a useful feature when you have capacity to add it.

This is a smart move by @Mastodon. / #X journalism is struggling, and doesn’t want journalism. Mastodon is leaning into it though, “To reinforce and encourage Mastodon as the go-to place for journalism, we’re launching a new feature today.” I think this is a lever for differentiation; making Mastodon more valuable to journalists and users.

Business hates regulation. This is exactly how regulation happens. It’s invited. For decades, the open web has succeeded as the product of a shared social contract. Services honored Robots.txt and didn’t hotlink. sent traffic to websites. Today, well funded companies have voided the social contract and are accruing all value to themselves. As ’s now says, “Anyone can copy [content], recreate with it, reproduce with it. That has been ‘freeware.’”

earned $135B globally in 2023, of which $8.4B was from the . It faces a first offense fine of $13.5B for violating the , or 60% more than it earned from the EU. A second offense would deliver a fine of 240% more than it earns from the EU. There is a non zero chance that Meta leaves the EU.

“If Meta can’t get the EU back on its side, it faces a fine of up to 10% of its total worldwide turnover, rising to 20% in the case of repeated offenses.”

This is an invitation for regulation. Every software company is racing to add features, and many are accruing value by stealing from those who created it.

is facing action by the for violating the by offering a paid plan in lieu of the free version monetized by targeted ads. The consequence to Meta’s business is that it will make less margin per EU user or no profit at all. Through fines, the EU intends to tell how much Meta can charge for its services, if anything at all.

The Apple would need 8GB of RAM and an iPhone-size battery to run Apple Intelligence. I assume some relay features will arrive down the road, but for now, the Watch needs to work without any iPhone attached.

“The problem is, Intelligence doesn't run on the Apple Watch. For that matter, it won't run on any but the most high-end recent iPhone.”

Says Microsoft’s Mustafa Suleyman, “I think that with respect to content that’s already on the open web, the social contract of that content since the ‘90s has been that it is fair use. Anyone can copy it, recreate with it, reproduce with it. That has been ‘freeware,’ if you like, that’s been the understanding.”

🤔 The RIAA must he thrilled, now that ’s deemed that every piece of music published on YouTube is public domain. Yay Napster.

@Npars01 Momentum is starting to build for a regularity response. The “wow” factor has warn off. The words and actions and actions of some companies are increasingly bold, and more people and press are aligning on the sentiment of feeling victimized. I hope investors are looking to use cases beyond plagiarism…

It’s not implausible that will have to exit the . The EU labels it anticompetitive for Apple to deliver vertically integrated services where such deep integrations are not also available to third-parties that Apple must make available and support. The EU also labels it anticompetitive to even delay the release of such services to the EU. The EU fine for a first offense is 10% or global revenue. Second is 20%, and the in the EU is 8%.

is rewriting links on sites that reference the malware-serving Polyfill[dot]io domain. It’s understandable that a site owner wouldn’t want their infrastructure provider to modify code on their site. In this case, Cloudflare is modifying the code to serve scripts as originally intended by the site author. I’m in favor of this,

An important distinction is slowly being uncovered about the definition of the term "fediverse." Who is it that gets to decide what this place is? How are we being represented? These are not easy questions to answer and if we don't do a better job describing ourselves, then the job will get done for us by people who don't understand the underlying values we hold.

@liaizon Federation is a term used to describe an action or state occurring over the ActivityPub (or AT) protocol. It’s neither a brand nor owned. In app design, devs use different icons to define open-menu and close-menu actions, different symbols for sending emails — envelopes and paper airplanes — and different symbols to chat widgets among other actions. Meta serves users all over the world, and in some of those places, using a pentagram as a UI convention might be offensive.
