In allotment news I just sat on the only squash plant that was absolutely thriving and not shredded by this year's epic slugmageddon. Here are some things I did not sit on.

Edit: there is a frog in those self seeded wild flowers (you might think of them as 'weeds' but you'd be wrong)

Gooseberries fattening up nicely
View over elephant garlic a lot of self seeders including champion and forget me not, some tall purple alliums, potato bed, some newly prepped manured beds (ready for netting and brassicas), and berry bushes at the back. There is a wood chip path and a red watering can.

@colhill long, long winter of constant rain and relative warmth, so the slugs are basically godzilla now

Amazing really how long the gap is between 1.5 being completely dismissed within the scientific community (it essentially had been when I left a decade ago), and politics/media catching on... which is frankly very unfair on most people - who just won't really know the scale of what's coming, because how would they.

I bet men don't get to hear this often (or ever?) 😉

An early career female researcher, whom I even hardly know, approached me at a meeting and said that she doesn't want to be (so successful) like me, because they plan to have kids in a couple of years.

Never mind the bizarre prejudice of this remark. As a matter of fact, I was not giving life hacks, nor commenting anyone's life choices. This came out of the blue in a next sentence to "Congrats on your professorship".

@TatianaIlyina when I got my lectureship two people I had little to do with said ~'congrats, now you have a permanent job, you can have kids'. Like that was the first thing they both, separately, thought to say. People can be absolutely bizarre 🤡

Sending a wren off to its new home tomorrow. Stabbing wool is very cathartic.

So it turns out, it's possible to get a house fully off fossil fuels, removing an ancient oil tank/boiler system and moving to electric (on 100% renewable energy contract and solar-ready), improving insulation all round the house with all new windows, doors and massive amount of loft insulation... and have your EPC rating get worse 🙃 I get why the numbers come out that way, but also, wtaf.

@dymaxion I think technically oil is both cheaper and more efficient than electricity, if you don't think about emissions as being relevant

@dymaxion yeah, we couldn't get a heat pump for various reasons, so decided to electrify with a view to getting it ready for solar... just can't afford the solar
