I am now going to boost every positive reply I got after I requested positive replies while I was away from my doomsday computer.

Watch my feed for each one. And to everyone who contributed to a Moment of Relief and Positivity, thank you deeply.

@GottaLaff Since your new home is in the lower mainland: In Burnaby, the municipal government changed in the last decade, and they brought in tenant protections that keep people housed when their building goes for development. I like to talk about this because it shows how much difference it can make to vote in local elections. Punk Legend Joe "shithead" Keithley pushed the legislation, and he made city council by a handful of votes. If hubby and I hadn't voted, we could be demovicted by now

@GottaLaff wasn't trying to imply you could. You asked for positive news, that's my favourite positive political story cause it involves an old school punk rocker and saved me personally from having to move my family back in with my parents. I added why I like talking about it; cause imo it's worth letting people know how much impact a local election can have

"Chain migration" is the BEST kind of immigration. You want people who move to you country to have a local network and support. You want new immigrants to bring their family, and the economic activity they generate and the value they add to communities to be in YOUR country.

I can't believe we let them use it like a slur. It's good and do it more.

What? They brought their elderly parents? That's good for US and for them (the new American we want to be successful and happy.) RIGHT?

Vincarsi ,
@Vincarsi@mastodon.social avatar

@futurebird Now see, that only works if you see them as fellow human beings who have dreams and desires and who'll respond to generosity and acceptance with appreciation instead of the traditional view of them as parasites who come here and somehow FORCE our government to treat us all like shit because something something welfare something taxes something noisy and I don't like being reminded that different people exist and I have a right to live with my head in the sand! /s

What is a little white lie you were told as a child, that you believed for too long?

I was way too old when I figured out a human couldn't actually get sucked down a drain or flushed down a toliet. I used to cling to my little brothers, and pull them out of the bath any time my Mum would pull to plug.

Vincarsi ,
@Vincarsi@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr The old chestnut "If you keep making that face, it might get stuck that way!"
Tbf, I was always skeptical, cause I figured if it WAS true there would be a lot more people walking around with stuck faces, but I still worried about it.
It was actually the scene from Liar Liar where Jim Carrey is trying to prove to his kid that he can't lie that finally confirmed for me this was, in fact, a deliberate falsehood. As that was one of the questions the kid used to test dad's magic honesty.

Things I won’t miss when we move to BC🇨🇦:

California red areas all the way home. Billboards for The Epoch Times. Trump banners. Fascist variations of the American flag. Anti-Newsom/Pelosi signs.

Instant anxiety inducers.

@GottaLaff @MayhamMonday pro tip from a BCer: Stick to orange. The race in this province is almost always blue vs orange, so voting for red is just likely to split the vote. Anyway, keeping the NDP with enough seats to swing the balance of power in the house has worked out on a number of issues (they were the party that got universal healthcare through, way back when).
It's not perfect, but being a progressive organizer is generally easier with the NDP than Cons or Liberals.

Vincarsi ,
@Vincarsi@mastodon.social avatar

@GottaLaff @MayhamMonday Fair enough. Even if you don't vote though, you seem to be a pretty engaged person and I have no clue if you're as familiar with our system as you are with yours. Thought you might find it interesting 🤷

Vincarsi ,
@Vincarsi@mastodon.social avatar

@GottaLaff well, if you're in need of progressive friends in the Vancouver area, feel free to hmu. I'm not as tied into organizing spaces as I used to be, but I try to stay up with current events even when I don't have spoons to participate.

Humanity is messy. No one goes through their life without having bad days, gross body problems, and general weirdness.
It seems to me that a lot of hierarchies are enforced by shaming certain aspects of the human experience as if they are something aberrant. Because they are in fact totally common though, class tends to stratify along the lines of who is better able to hide those facets of existence. Thus, radical acceptance of the messier parts of humanity inhibits the reproduction of hierarchy

I just saw a post about an American who is so disgusted by the political shift to the right that he moved to.. wait for it.. Italy

Vincarsi ,
@Vincarsi@mastodon.social avatar

@philip_cardella @skinnylatte They want it to be Trump because having a single bad guy who can be defeated is much more tolerable than the prospect of having to deconstruct our entire economy to prevent bad actors from gaining so much power over our daily lives.
They really want to believe it's just bad apples and not that power attracts rotten people like rot attracts flies

We're so used to this, but I would like academics to take a moment and look at how much of the official and unofficial discussion around university is about despair, imposter syndrome, stress, harassment, etc.

What I often see in these discussions, especially the official ones, is discussion of coping mechanisms and "self-care".

What I rarely see in these discussions is questioning why we've built an education system that treats people this way in exchange for this education. @academicchatter

Vincarsi ,
@Vincarsi@mastodon.social avatar

@ml @academicchatter My theory, is that it's because we come from a strongman culture. Where our leaders have thought and think of intelligence as a kind of "mental strength" so they've set up learning institutions to "weed out the weak" the same way you would challenge athletes to increase their strength. Completely ignoring that acquisition of knowledge is far more effective when done cooperatively bc the stress of constant competition inhibits creative thinking.

I used to look at these kinds of statements as deceptive PR, but increasingly I see them more through the lens of faith.

The tech billionaires are true believers and don’t accept they’re misunderstanding things like intelligence because they believe themselves to be geniuses.

Vincarsi ,
@Vincarsi@mastodon.social avatar

@parismarx the world started making a lot more sense after I realised that the "visionary leaders of the future" are actually spoiled rich brats who stopped maturing as soon as they got access to the trust funds which, sizable as they are, are dwarfed by their astronomical egos.
Meritocracy is BS, people with wealth hire people with actual skills, then use their wealth and power to suck up all the notoriety for themselves while destroying the credibility of the creator so they can't protest.
