There is this notion in futurism and scifi speculation conversations that "technologically advanced" species are less vulnerable to extinction.

I'm skeptical. Technology solves many problems but causes new ones.

The primary factors that protect against extinction are:

  1. Sheer numbers
  2. Dispersion
  3. Diversity

Technology can aid in improving these factors, spreading people over more continents, or worlds, increasing population.

But there are other ways to meet these goals.

@futurebird technology mostly seems likely to be what makes it possible to overcome those three factors and wipe out the whole species in one go. Thanks, Fermi Paradox.

Technology does a lot of other pleasant things though, when it's not wiping us out in whole or in part. I like that about it.

I recently added a heating cable for my Camponotus pennsylvanicus colony. ( it’s been cold in our coop and they have brood already, knew they’d like the warmth.) This same colony has also, much to my annoyance, insisted on keeping a small midden of what I assumed was trash in one chamber of their log. They have a big garbage pile far away in the outworld too … so I thought they were just lazy. But when I added the heating cable they moved the garbage… to another chamber (?) 1/

@futurebird I move my garbage piles around in response to changes in my environment too... Basement, garage, attic, an endless cycle.
Last time I moved house, I realized that I'd paid trash haulers almost as much as I'd paid movers, which was weird (cost a lot more per volume to dispose of trash than have it carefully transferred a few towns over).

"desktop size" air purifiers are such BS that cheap knock-offs don't even bother to put the charcoal filter in line with the fan.

Love to know how this product ended up ... like this. Why put the filter in at all?

Notice how there are steal bars & plates mostly just to make the device heavier & more legitimate seeming.

Pity the poor office worker who lugs this fraudulent monstrosity to work everyday hoping to make the air in their cubical a little less terrible.😢

@futurebird did you see this? Seems relevant and on brand...

"The "locator chip" was shown to be equally fake; one example put on display by the FBI contained dead ants that had been frozen and stuck onto paper with epoxy glue."
