Happy to have found this place and the wide variety of interests to enjoy. Proud to be lefty who cares about our planet's future. Still struggling to advocate for good govt & strong progressive community policy.

Listen, all I’m saying is that I’ve seen more pictures of Donald Trump and Jeffrey Epstein together than I have of Donald Trump and his son Barron.

@Strandjunker
Perhaps that is fortunate for Barron.

Librarians are (social) heroes; stepping up when other social services have fallen away, to help those with few other places to go...

No wonder the Right wants to defund the libraries (via attrition against local authorities), when you look at the pragmatic but vital social support they are offering to the vulnerable & isolated.

[this is a long read but worth it]

@for @nini @ChrisMayLA6 @bookstodon Only the Old Testament part.
They have never read The Beatitudes, doubt they have even heard of them and would scoff at all of them.

"The meme enrages Israel supporters because Israel apologia depends on mountains of verbiage to spin obvious atrocities as reasonable and appropriate"

"The retort is offensive to Israel apologists because it takes away their only weapon. Without mountains of narrative, all you’ve got is a nonstop deluge of raw video footage depicting the blatant genocidal criminality of Israel."

'Manipulators understand that they can use narrative to promote material agendas if they can get people to believe those narratives, and it enrages them when people handwave away the narrative and stick solely with the raw data of material reality.'

I'm trying to read This Is How You Lose The Time War, but I'm struggling to understand what is going on, and I'm not sure if it gets better. It feels like a dense read. I heard so much about it, but perhaps I'm too impatient?

@dilmandila @bookstodon I struggled too, along with others in a reading group. Personally wished I hadn't bothered and nobody gave it unstinting praise, so you are not alone.

I need some new science fiction to read, who has some suggestions? I don't like military sci-fi. For reference, my favorite series is the Expanse, I also enjoyed Scalzi's Collapsing Empire, I love Robert Charles Wilson's books. I mostly enjoy space operas and unique stories about technology, for example I really liked the recent book Mountain in the Sea about AI and intelligent octopus. Suggestions from the awesome Bookstodon community? @bookstodon

Have you tried Becky Chambers Wayfarer series, beginning with A Long Way to a Small Angry Planet?
Each following can be read as standalone but some characters recur and best read in order. Outstanding characters and interaction among species, diverse, great dialogue, and action but no big space battles.

If you like Scalzi, for sheer fun and a good plot, written in first person, I highly recommend The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells. She is a brilliant, versatile SFF writer and this series is a joy. Seeing humanity through the eyes of an uncontrolled robot security officer is perfect.
Hope these appeal .😊

@Sablebadger @Jennifer @bookstodon Becky Chambers books and Murderbot distracted me from some severe pain lately, recommend for 'comfort' reads. 😊🤗

    @bookstodon I've burned through all of the Brother Cadfael books in the past couple of months, and I have a question: I've Googled this a bunch, but I still can't find anybody online who is connecting the dots to prove that Cadfael himself was the reason that there were so many murders in a relatively few years, in this tiny 12th century English town.

    That kind of analysis HAS to be a thing, doesn't it?

    You wouldn't want to live around Midsomer, with the Barnaby cousins and their sergeants, would you?
    They excel in multiple sadistic and bloodthirsty murders with delightful surroundings and immaculate gardens.
    But I am compelled to watch because I miss England's wonderful summer hedgerows...😉😊

    😃😃They do seem pretty ghastly, but make for more fun. Suspect in real life only wealthy live there nowadays. But I still love looking at the old mansions, quaint cottages and scenery.
    It is nostalgia for me, English countryside was a joy.
