I don't think the twee swallow fledglings know who their parents are, as soon as another adult flies buy they open their mouths.

Better luck today with the tree swallow fledglings.

Not sure which one I like better, incoming, or the "in flight refuelling"

It was nice and bright so I could get both the high shutter speed and smaller aperture for better depth of field.

It's a little quieter at our usual hangout now that migration is done. The activity these days is watching the local bird care for their fledglings.

The little sparrow was hanging out on some flowers with a mouth full of insects.

A male hairy/downy woodpecker was being tailed by it's little one.

    @loren lovely photo.

Hoping to see some swallow chicks soon. Volunteers at a local part have nesting boxes setup for tree swallows. As of last weekend, could see pairs taking turns on the nest, but no checks yet.

From this morning, I guess the eastern kingbird and the baltimore oriole were not up to sharing the same tree.

After taking a swipe at the oriole the kingbird flies off.

Saw the first cedar waxwings of the year this morning. They were in the same tree the orioles have been the last couple weeks.

    Just wonderful looking birds.

Also spotted these fledglings on the ground, so I backed up and waited. Soon enough one of the parents came by with food.

Sometimes you just get lucky. This little yellow warbler literally landed in front of us, and is nicely highlighted by the sun just behind and to the right.

Didn't even need to crop this photo.

    Taken this morning.

@loren in the first couple frames I can see a small spider high-tailing it away from the bird. I suspect this was its web….

Later that day, daughter was sitting on the sofa and saw something different land in the maple tree out back. Upon closer look, it was a great crested flycatcher.

Also made a couple trips to Breuckner Rhododendron Gardens on the way to work. Seems like being along the lake with a mix of pines a fruit trees, there are lots of birds there.

One morning, there were a couple loud singing warblers, Merlin had identified as pine warblers. Probably not coincidentally, they were in the pine trees. This one came out of the pine trees to eat from a spider web.

It took a while but also found this american redstart, buried deep in some brush.

Two new lifers for me yesterday, and I didn't even need to leave the house.

It's interesting how it can be quiet then all of a sudden many birds flock to the backyard.

This black-throated green warbler was in our back tree eating gnats.

... and this blue-headed Vireo was in the tree at the same time, along with some kinglets and gold finches.

Not sure if it too was eating gnats or was after the maple blossoms.

As soon as the blossoms and bugs are out all the song birds return.

Spring migration well underway, such a big change in the birds hanging around the last couple weeks.

Only a couple stragglers left, saw one long-tailed duck and a pair of buffleheads.

Hundreds of red-necked grebes and swallows were back today.

Missed a great opportunity to capture a belted kingfisher up close, but there were a half dozen horned grebes that were more than happy to fish close to shore.

One day I'd love to be lucky enough to capture a swallow in flight as it's catching a gnat.

I was able to get down close to the shoreline while this little guy was under water to capture it up close.

A rare photo of an upright nuthatch.

Interesting watching them grab seeds from a feeder, go to a nearby tree, stick the seed in a crevasse in the bark, peck the seed with their beak and the eat it.

Some days, birding just means opening your window and taking a photo.

This little guy was just outside my home office window.

Another grey dreary day. Heard crows making a commotion outside.

A hawk had perched in our maple out back. Crows left and the hawk stayed.

    Who is watching who?

Photo of the hawk at 600mm with my mirrorless camera, same photo cropped, and a photo of the hawk with the 1x lens on my iPhone.

Red tailed hawk staring straight at camera. Uncrossed photo, we see the full body, brown eyes, yellow mouth, brown and light brown feathers.
