Hi! We're Lokjo, a world wide online map, build in europe.

We support local shops and do things a bit different:

  • no data collecting.
  • no algorithm.
  • no zoomlevel listing, we show all searched locations at once.
  • corporate locations are stripped from the search list. Fair is fair.

There's 5 languages, we're based on OSM, and have lots of useful functions, read the quick FAQ to make the best use of the map.

John Deere has laid off roughly 1000 workers so far this year.

But the company reported a profit of over $10 billion in 2023.

Its CEO received $26.7 million in total compensation.

And it spent over $7 billion on stock buybacks.

Textbook corporate greed.

@rbreich

There is a very easy way to stop this from happening:

stop. using. corporate. services.

Like netflix, google, facebook, apple, microsoft, tesla, twitter, amazon, siri, disney, vimeo, canal+, visa, paypal, stripe, etc etc etc.

When you stop using their services they won't have income and small honest companies can take over.

Done.

This massive Truck, 45 tons of Truck, is electric, and it MAKES more ENERGY than it uses.

Because it goes up to get filled, and comes back down full.

"In this case, the Swiss e-dumper will generate an estimated 10% surplus with each trip it makes, essentially becoming an "energy plus" vehicle instead of a net consumer of electricity."

Part of the work day: charging things OFF the Truck.

SCIENCE

Humanity is BLOOMING, maturing, arriving at civilization.

    @kevinrns

    If this would be true, it would be a perpetuum mobile.

    It could charge the world with all electric needs. No more pollution, oil or gas companies etc.

    Not sure if this is actually happening.

    Ah well ok that explains it, thanks!

    If you see a new youTube channel with a plain sounding name like "NatureView" or "BrightScience" etc. and there is what looks like a tempting video on a specific education topic "Most Active Volcanoes" or "Incredible Carnivorous Plants"

    There is a 50/50 chance it will be a generated voice with stock footage and a script written by GPT.

    I am now avoiding videos if I don't recognize the creator, or don't see signs it was made by a person.

    So much spam!

    With a bit of luck, google will go down one day soon. :)

    Boeing shareholders approved a $33M pay package for CEO Dave Calhoun, despite overseeing huge losses and safety problems.

    It's the biggest package ever given to a Boeing CEO.

    Calhoun is resigning by year's end. Guess what he gets then?

    A $45 million golden parachute.

    Unreal.

    Lokjo ,
    @Lokjo@mstdn.social avatar

    @rbreich

    And every time people buy a ticket using Boeing they agree and financially support this company to continue these things.

    Stop using services form corrupt corporations will stop their mis-behaviour.

    It's that simple.

    So now SpaceX, with no working spacesuit, and years behind on it's multi-billion dollar moon lander, is lobbying NASA to go to the Hubble Space Telescope.

    "A successful private mission could improve Hubble's ability to point at celestial objects and, by boosting its orbit, extend its life by years... however, an accident could leave the multibillion-dollar telescope broken — or, even more tragically, tethered to the dead bodies of the astronauts sent to repair it."

    Knowing american corporations a bit, this isn't about a silly 'better internet connection'. There are already tons of high speed connections, worldwide.

    Since the first satellite 70 years ago there have been roughly 9000 satellites in orbit. Now Musk plans to install 42.000 satellites, in low orbit, capable of listening to every signal on every continent, and from the beginning the US army has been involved.

    Do the math.

    "‘Tone-deaf’ #fossil #gas growth in #Europe is speeding #ClimateCrisis, say activists - Just 2% of continent’s gas capacity has planned retirement date despite pledges to #decarbonise, study shows
    ...
    Campaigners used data from Global Energy Monitor to map Europe’s gas-fired power plants and found a planned retirement date had been set for just 2% of the continent’s capacity.

    The analysis found that #Italy, the #UK and #Germany had the greatest planned and installed capacity to make #electricity from fossil gas – a fuel that is cleaner than #coal but still pumps planet-heating pollutants into the air when it is dug up and burned. The three countries agreed to “fully or predominantly” decarbonise their power sectors by 2035 at a meeting of #G7 climate and energy ministers last year."

    @ariadne The solution is not to tone down energy sources into renewables. People need their energy.

    The solution is to make people aware to USE less energy. LEss screens, less scooters, less digital toys, less useless electrical car rides, less food deliveries at home, etc etc.

    Upon retiring from work at age 58 (lucky me) in 2012, I chose to leave the United States in favor of Europe, where I ended up staying in Budapest, Hungary, for six years. I rented a studio apartment near the city center, bought a used bicycle, and enjoyed a modest, inexpensive, yet comfortable lifestyle.

    Since my return to the U.S. in 2018, I’ve found there are many things I miss. When I lived in Budapest, there were three different small independent bakeries within a five-minute walk from my apartment. Also in that same radius were a couple of almost literal hole-in-the-wall fruit and vegetable shops offering delicious fresh produce. And although the nearby area held no chain restaurants, it was home to several quite good local eateries.

    There were clothing stores selling both new and used goods, as well as shoe stores, all of them small and independent, not necessarily carrying a wide selection, but providing high quality items at surprisingly low prices, and with friendly trustworthy service. Plus, within a five-minute walk was a practically free public transit system than made frequent stops and could take me almost anywhere I wanted to go within the city, safely, reliably, and quickly.

    So I wonder, why is it that — at least in my current neighborhood in suburban Virginia — the only options for baked goods or produce or clothing or home furnishings or hardware or almost anything else are chain stores? Well, that, or freaking Amazon. Why are all other choices so limited, so few and so far between? Why does virtually everything depend upon — no, actually demand the use of a car to get there?

    Most United Statesians, I suspect, have no idea that people in other countries live so differently than the way we do here. We have been sold on the idea, taught from an early age, that ours is the best way, indeed the only sensible way to do things. Anyone suggesting that a less car-centric and hyper-capitalistic culture is not only possible but desirable, that it could be much more pleasant and satisfying, not to mention safer and more friendly to the environment, well, they plainly don’t know what they’re talking about. It makes me sad and angry.

    Oh hi! Did you say non-corporate and non-chains? Our map is based on that. :blobhappy:

    When you search for locations, we filter them out.

    And if there isn't any in your area, for sure you have a reason to start one!

    Hard to overstate how enshittified and botshitted Google Maps has become. Went looking for my local locksmith on Gmaps. Maps shows 20+ fake locksmith referral scam outlets and doesn't even register the real locksmith, despite it being fully visible in Street View.

    Instead, a red pin on the shop identifies it as a fake locksmith scammer. The real locksmith - which has been there SINCE 1942 (!!) and is a verified merchant - doesn't even show up.

    Google Maps, showing the storefront for Golden State Lock as an empty building.

    @gfkdsgn @bougiewonderland @pluralistic @AnnaAnthro Thanks for the heads up! The location wasn't noted on Openstreetmap (our provider of locations) so we just added it, should be on our map automagically updated soon. (you'll see an icon there, the red basket is for 'retail' in general)

    Ah, and we'll work on adding locksmiths to the quickmenu in general, just noticing it!

    p.s. if it suddenly gets activated on google, then you'll know they are snooping on OSM
