Exciting ant queen collecting trip in AZ. Why does it feel like all the coolest ants are in the South and South West. It's not fair.

Carol Pasternak shared this great video of a Luna caterpillar (Actias luna) eclosing to their second or perhaps 3rd instar.

I would love to see iNaturalist incorporate the ability to upload videos and append them to creatures. Sometimes you need to see how an insect moves to really understand them. The serving and hosting could be an issue but it would be worth it. #caterpiller #moths #flutterby

@futurebird is it just that they have the protection of their sisters from predators or d they actively help each other shed the old exoskeleton?

I must admit that I assumed ants do not grow once they turn from pupae to workers.

@futurebird seems like she shares some experiences with the guy in this engraving:

So night terrors, sleep paralysis etc. seem to be a real thing. I've had "bad dreams" but never anything that sounds like these experiences. It sounds like it's scary. Scary like when you are home alone and hear a sound and don't know what it is.

I'm curious if people who can have this are can be aware that it's not real when it's happening.

When I get anxious I can also know "this is just that thing" and I'm sort of detached about it?

Can that happen with fear?

Landa ,

@futurebird I experienced episodes of sleep paralysis all my life. As a kid I was terrified but I never told anyone.

One day I asked our family doctor and he gave me a simplified (though longwinded :D) explanation of sleep paralysis.

It didn't stop after that (though they became rarer with age).

Usually I recognise what's happening which dissipates any fear that might have started and I found that even the episodes where I don't realise what's happening are much more benign than before.

Is it a very bad idea to try to parse and make drawings from a nested arrayList of objects (some objects are lists) of arbitrary depth in java? or should I give up and write this in python where I already know how to do this. Stuff like: [R1, [R2, R3, [R4, R2], R5], [R6], R1]?

@futurebird I‘d say it’s not really idiomatic* but especially for a one-off or a prototype it’s no big problem.

In classic Java it can turn out verbose and somewhat brittle, but newer features like pattern matching for instanceof ease that burden quite a bit.

*) for what that’s worth ^^

Last night our cable internet box randomly died. It’s totally fried and must be replaced. This happened just as my husband got home from work, waking me up to tell me the governor of NY had issued a warning about power outages during the Coronal Mass Ejection (there was a big solar storm last night) — basically I thought the world was ending and put my laptop in the oven. (it’s a faraday cage)

I may have overreacted.

@futurebird a few years ago, my hometown’s new city council wanted to turn off Christmas decorations in the city earlier (not private ones, those the council puts up).
There was drama ranging from „crime will soar“ to „communist council cancels citizens‘ Christmas“ (yes she‘s actually a communist, no she’s not a Stalinist or anything).

There was a reduction but people stopped complaining soon.

Some just fear any change to the status quo, so I think it’s difficult but doable:) @lampsofgold

All the people who answered the poll saying they want a "strong leader" are invited to have me as that strong leader.

Under my care and rule we will begin with logic. Then move on to mathematics, and then the sciences. You will learn. You will journal daily. You will use effective language and "When you do X it makes me feel Y" statements.

You will spend an hour each day drawing and contemplating your assigned insect.

It will be very therapeutic and strict and "strong"

$1800 per month.

I don't even get this one. Naturally new food products should be carefully screened but this simply seems to be about ... being angry that someone else might not want to eat meat? Just thinking a product meets a need you don't share... so it should be banned?

@futurebird I’ve seen this here in Europe as well, a few people get angry that others don’t want to eat meat anymore.

From what I gather they fear losing the majority status in case a lot of people decide to eat less/no meat.

¯_(ツ)_/¯

Really not liking the new trend of non-visual arts academics using AI to create graphics for their blogs, slide presentations, videos, etc.

VALUE HUMAN LABOR & CREATIVITY

We already know that this AI was created by ripping off visual artists without consent or compensation. When you use AI to goose up your work instead of using public domain, the right CC license, legit stock licensing or work you've commissioned. you are engaging in academic misconduct, in my opinion.

@LouisIngenthron Why even have it then if neither author nor audience care one jot for it?

This is as puzzling to me as the „it can turn bullet points into walls of text“ and „it can turn walls of text into bullet points“ feature pair that’s commonly touted as wonderful capabilities of LLMs.

How would that make the world better/safer/more beautiful?
