Don’t know if that helps you - here in Europe it doesn’t look better. In all countries you can choose between the crazy, the stupid and the as-always. I‘m afraid the politics machine transforms you in one of those or scares away the motivated.

DrunkenPirate ,

It has the big advantage of easy long term energy storage. You can store power made by PV in summer and use it in winter.

I don’t get it. For me it seems like „it’s not 100% the best way, so you have to stop it.“ Sure, a car-free, equal society that treats nature as family is the way to go. But why do they try to kill the first movers? Because Elon Musk is a weirdo? Why not stopping the coal diggers a few kilometers to the east? Or the chemical plants to the south first? That’s such a brain fuck.

I worked for TV back in these days s and we interviewed some Industry lobbyists. The common blabla as the camera was on. Typically, they tell you the entire story if the camera is off. And those stories are quite complex without Good-Bad - that’s why it’s too complicated for a 20 sec news shot.

They told us that the industry is feeding dead animals to cow’s because of the needed minerals and the costs. They can easily replace it by natural minerals, but that would raise the costs of meat. And consumers mainly choose by price. I think it’s too easy to blame the customers only. The industry is responsible as well.

I learnt two points: The industry won’t change and it will happen again - with different names and issues.

Second point: I‘m part of the issue as well and if I change my way of living, it’s better for animals and nature.

(And: As journalist you become cynical after a while. What you see in TV is a fraction of reality. Reality is just too complex for TV)

Thailand’s economy is falling behind its Southeast Asian peers Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia amid growing middle-income trap fears ( www.aljazeera.com )

Thailand’s economy grew just 1.9 percent last year, according to state economic planners, compared with growth of 5 percent or higher in the Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam....

One of the few countries that never have been colonized by the West.

DrunkenPirate ,

Honestly, I can’t see that we speed up somewhere. All I read is that last year was a new high in CO2 emissions. There‘s simply no time to buy anymore. I assume Geoengineering is the only way we can somehow keep the climate reasonable. Even it comes with additional dangers. That’s how humankind keeps progressing. E.g. Anyone going to stop AI? Or even social media? No!

DrunkenPirate ,

Go out and plant a tree. I’ve done mine 10 years ago.

DrunkenPirate ,

And here’s how the sandbox of those biests look from above https://maps.app.goo.gl/sD3bBKWmZWoocis49?g_st=ic

Please note the city close by - same size as the smaller pit - has 100k inhabitants. And zoom out a bit you’ll see Berlin.

We have a few of those areas in Germany. I hate it.

DrunkenPirate ,

DrunkenPirate ,

I just learned: In ancient times the government paid money to their citizens to get their fellowship. Only conquered countries had to pay taxes.

And in ancient times in Mesopotamia, there have been quite regular debt reset events. All private debts got null. Commercial debts still were valid.

I‘m currently reading „Debt“ by David Graeber. Interesting to read how religion, money, guilt and debt are intertwined. How we are forced into the rat race by burden us with debts - with both, moral and financial debts.

DrunkenPirate ,

I‘m not sure if you interpret more into the words than there is. If you read the articles text thoroughly you’ll find a difference in those deads.

  • The dies-articles: „after phone calls“ , „after x days in car“, „days after cry for help“ and others. Those are all after some time.

  • The killed-articles: „in a air strike/ rocket attack“ which is immediately.

This sounds quite correct from a grammar point of view. Still, it’s sad for the kids and family.

DrunkenPirate ,

Ich finde ja erschreckend, dass die Bildungsabschlüsse von Männern so schlecht geworden sind. Also über die Jahre hinweg. Müsste man ja eigentlich mal Jungen mehr fördern, oder?

DrunkenPirate ,

German here. Same shit with house prices here. Unbelievable expensive. Netherlands, Denmark, Swiss, France all the same. All out of the cheap money/ interests thanks to Lehmans & broker bros.

The only country where housing is affordable is China. They built way too many apartment buildings. Entire ghost towns. People are fucked there as well though. Standard people lost a lot of money. Crazy world.

DrunkenPirate ,

Oh this sounds familiar for a German in Ruhr area. This area is strongly undermined by coal mines. Imagine LA with many levels of cellars under it. Down to even 1000mtrs.

Ruhr area sunk down year on year for around 100 years now. Many buildings would get drowned by natural ground water if there wouldn’t be pumps. These pumps are supposed to run forever. It’s financed by a fund of the coal mines and called “Eternal fund” Last coal mine closed 2018.

DrunkenPirate ,

Last point made me smile. Good one

DrunkenPirate ,

Very nice animation. Haven’t seen it in this remarkable way. Quite insightful. Even your writings.

Just want to add some points: One still can see in todays „power map“ which countries haven’t been colonized and stayed independent. Those countries are still somehow more powerful and independent in their economics:
Japan, Thailand, Persia (Iran) The way they managed to stay out of the muddle was different. Still it is burnt into their strategic politics and self-confidence.

For China it was a trauma that is still active. It never has been a follower in their history, but a leader. We‘ll see in next centuries if that ends into a world war III.

One of the most fascinating questions is, and for me as well, why does it start in Europe? Not in India, China or Persia.
Does anyone has good books about this question?
