As always, finding the way to login and actually logging in was the most painful part of completing a peer review. Not mincing words when Springer Nature asks me to comment on the quality of the experience.

Them: what would you like to see improved about the system?
Me: The login for god's sake! You must be aware that it is of meme-level atrociousness.

Meme of Boromir saying "One does not simply... log into editorial manager"

@dingemansemark @academicchatter For that reason, I have chosen to simply email my review to the action editor and authors. The journal didn't like it but I told them I couldn't care much less.

So I was joking about running doom on lace bobbins. But, for all the talk of ants solving problems and ant computers and ant algorithms...

There aren't any ant logic gates. At least not to my knowledge and not yet. Frankly, binary logic is antithetical to the nature of ants. You only need to watch the way that ants solve problems as individuals to see you are dealing with a different sort of system.

Codpieces started off as parts of armor, and later became garments to protect men's modesty as short doublets came into fashion in the 15th century. The BBC looks at their evolution, international versions (on the streets of Paris they were known as "braguettes") and why they went away.

@CultureDesk @histodons A funny side note to this history is that the word bracket for ( ) comes from the french word for cod piece: braguette. And now you know why. (The ethymological history goes over architectural ornaments, by the way)

@CultureDesk @histodons I read that in the pretty cool "The etymologicon" by Mark Forsyth.
