Lichens growing over a black and white rock surface (possibly granite?).

The orange one is, I think, Teloschistes fasciculatus. The black one could be a Pseudephebe (?), and the grey one... maybe Placopsis?... I'm probably wrong on all of those.

A little collection of things with no particular connection except that I liked them...

  • Brugmansia / Datura (Angel's Trumpet) seed pod. Spikey!
  • Double-headed Cosmos flower
  • Dahlia bloom
  • Echinops flower head

A large scabious (possibly cephalaria gigantea?) looking gorgeous despite the wan hazy sunshine.

I've always liked scabious - from those dark near-black ones, to the strident red of Knautia Macedonica (hmm, I must try and grow those one day!). They're just...friendly flowers...

"Clash of the Titans"...

A couple of male mallards having a scrap down by the boating pond

Two male ducks fighting against a backdrop of hazy water reflections. The one on the left has its head reared back as far as it can, and its beak open, showing the internal ridges and what looks like a spur on its tongue. The other duck has the feathers of its opponent's neck in its beak as they butt chests together, and appears to be staring into the first duck's eyes

    I love the deep purple colours on this osteospermum, and the way the petals become darker the closer you look to the centre.

There's a second row of petals inside this which are more tubular in shape, and show white inside the tube but a graduating white to purple exterior. Then there are several rows of unopened petals, darker purple again and more tightly packed to the centre. In the very middle of the flower all we can see are the 5-pointed-star shapes of the most intense purple - almost black - which are the tips of the most inner petals

    I found the most amazing tree last weekend, with gorgeous lichens all over one side.

    The red-capped lichen is a new one for me - I think it's Haematomma babingtonii. The textures are amazing, and they all look awesome together, especially with the moss to set it all off

One white powdery lichen has larger red caps with white trim held above its surface, but there are also black caps above another patch, and an orange splat in the top right corner with orange cups, and a yellow hair-like one off to one side. A large (comparatively) clump of moss inhabits the top left corner, with long fronds that look dark green asparagus tips

    "Lichen on a stick". Not your usual fare at the local County Fair or Agricultural Show, I grant you that. But kinda fascinating...

Cups, blobs, flakes, octopus arms, lobes, disks. Coarse, smooth, bumpy. There are tiny lengths of spider web connecting some of the growths, and strands of thin fiber from nearby plants lie across the lichen, or are caught up in the spider silk

    The spiral pattern of unfurling comfrey flowers

    Closeup on a hairy, spiky stem curling around itself. Along the outside of the spiral curl, pinky-purple bell-shaped flowers hang from hairy, spiky stems, getting smaller and less developed as they approach the end of the stem (the middle of the spiral), where they are little more than slightly hairy buds. The background is all blurred out, a mix of greens and greys.

    3/3 The petals of another sunflower, just half open this time, with many flowerlets visible inside

    Closeup, head-on photo of the bottom half of a sunflower. The petals have opened along the bottom bit still curl down along the top. The centre is partially visible, showing spiral rows of buds all in different stages of preparation to open. The inner ones all have a spur at their top, each of which points toward the centre of the flower
