I work in the field for a company with 40k staff and over 6 million customers.

We have about 100 dedicated data science professionals and we have 1 LLM we use for our chatbots vs a few hundred ML models running.

LLMs are overhyped and not delivering as much as people claim, most businesses doing LLM will not exist in 2-5 years because Amazon, Google and Microsoft will offer it all cheaper or free.

They are great at generating content but honestly most content is crap because it's AI rejuvenating something it's been trained on. They are our next gen spam for the most part.

I'd like to point out this is a hot take.

Enterprise infrastructure has been moving to containers for years because of scale and redundancy. Spinning up new VMs for every app failover is bloat and wasteful if it is able to be put in a container.

To really use them well, like everything in IT, understanding the underlying tech can be essential.

What are you even claiming? Billing is the same ease VM or container.

Cgroups became a thing in 2004 and then Google and Amazon started container offerings in 2008.

And you don't even need docker there are plenty of alternative engines.

Immich-go is stupid easy.

Just dump all your takeout zips in the same folder as immich-go and run the import. Lmk if you need help.

It ingested 60+ zips with 100gb of photos when I used it.

I've stopped reading this series so many times, only at Part 1 of The Dark Forest. Glad to know it gets better.

Starting from zero

I'm interested in exploring the world of self hosting, but most of the information that I find is incredibly detailed and specific, such as what type of CPU performs better, etc. What I'm really looking for is an extremely basic square 1 guide. I know basically nothing about networking, I don't really know any coding, but it...

Honestly, if you want small and cheap get a raspberry pi to play around or rent a VM.

If you care about storage too you can get a Synology NAS (pricy) which is pretty newbie proof and comes out of the box with different and photo sync along with support for VMs or docker.

I found Hyperion went on a bit but so did the Dune expanded series by Frank's son.

How should I host Handbrake?

I'm currently using Handbrake on a windows 11 installation of a desktop computer. I am planning on turning this desktop computer into a NAS and media server to replace my current raspberry pi 4 system. Handbrake works great on this computer, but I was wondering how I could use Handbrake on this system after I convert it into a...

If people leave to run their own piracy lemmy depending on where they host it they will probably get raided and have no lemmy.

The commenter obviously don't understand that at lemmy.world it hosts copies of content outside its instance which is why you block communities if you don't defend the whole instance.

Well, for starters if we looked at lemmy.dbzer0.com we can see the domain is held by tucows which is based in Canada which are a copyright protection friendly country. Sure the server is hosted on njalla.net which is based in Sweden. How hard do you think it would be for the FBI to gain the info they needed to:

  1. Figure out who pays the bills and owns the server?
  2. Get a copy of the server data for analysis?

The only way to resist this would be to host your instance on the darknet with good sec even then that is not 100%.
