Marveling at the world

Lots of Martian rocks and landscapes, some looking all too familiar, but don't be fooled by that: Mars is an inhospitable toxic planet. Let's not mistake fiction for reality.

I like dirt and rocks, but I Am Not A Geologist (IANAG).

Thurs 30 May 2024 🧵 continue

Justice says he believes that the wants him to repeat a significant portion of the .

He will read pages 6-35.

Each page yesterday took him just a little more than a minute, so this will take >30 mins.

Between that & the testimony readbacks, also expected to take >30 mins, there will likely be >1 hour this morning w/the jury in the courtroom, not actively deliberating.

Tues 29 May 2024 🧵
Good morning! It’s the last day of the #TrumpTrial before jury #deliberations.
Today Justice #Merchan will give #JuryInstructions. Then they will discuss the case among themselves for the first time; they have not been allowed to even discuss it w/each other as yet.

Closing arguments took place yesterday, & the lawyers will have no further opportunity to address the jurors before they determine whether #Trump is #guilty or not guilty of 34 felonies.

New location for on Sol 1144, RMC 52.1950.

This may be the last location visible by 's RTE camera, as the rover has now reached the theoretical limit of its field-of-view (cyan line). The has been programmed to capture one RTE image every sol for as long as it is able to wake up every sol perform its routine of gathering environmental and system data, as a stationary testbed.

The slope of the southern Neretva Vallis riverbank appears steepening at this new location. This may be the start of the hardest part of the descent to the ancient riverbed, on the way to the geologically interesting rock formation Bright Angel, the next science target for .

OK, OK... so IMPORTANT QUESTION. Can we say "globally" when discussing the entire surface of a celestial body such as Phobos? That Martian moon baby isn't remotely spherical. It's a potato.

Why not be creative? Just call it:
    Blobbal topology
and it shall be blobbally recognizable.

    (or, is it blobal?)

    Dissecting 's accident.

This animation shows one of the rotor blades before and after the 's 72nd landing. The fact that the image with the broken blade had to shrink and change perspective so much to match the other one is an indication of the RTE camera being much closer to the ground after landing 72.

Superimposed, transformed RTE images from and .

I guess that's true for space museums or for collectors, but for engineers what is actually priceless is the design documents, the test and actual telemetry data, and the experience of the people that built it. Those can help build better ones and give us unlimited fun 😀

lost communications with during the 's descent for landing after its pop-up , a few sols ago.

The helicopter was already out of sight and at a distance of ~1km, as seen in the map below. There is an obstructing mound about midway that rises 13m above the line-of-sight, which might be the reason for the loss of signal. Despite that, assuming Ingenuity's landing software worked as usual, the helicopter may be in good health, but

as if something dragged or hit the ground during (https://mastodon.social/@65dBnoise/111750833533763835)

The fact that there is just one image from attests to the fact that communication with the rover was already bad before the flight, and probably remained bad after popup which landed at about the same location.
