Two years ago I grew some Japanese maples from seeds I picked up around the neighbourhood https://sunny.garden/@brook/109356392494194372

Only two have managed to survive me not giving them enough water and shade during the past couple of scorching summers. They're getting cramped in their little pot and one isn't doing so well this spring, probably crowded, and also the soil they are in is just whatever random potting soil I had on hand at the time, not ideal.

I picked up a couple of nice pots from a bonsai shop this weekend and asked what they recommended for soil, and they said just straight akadama is all you need for maples, so that's what I'm going with.

Fingers crossed they survive the re-pot and hopefully the weaker one pulls through. :momiji:

Two small maple trees and their soil and root ball out of their pot, laying sideways in a round aluminum tray. A chopstick that has been used to clear away some of the dirt is resting beside them.
Two small maple trees with all of the soil around their roots washed away, lying sideways in a round aluminum pan being held up by a persons hand, over the brown tiles of a patio.
One small maple tree being held upright by a short loop of black wire in a green glazed rectangular bonsai pot. The wispy roots of the tree are laid out on a shallow layer of wet akadama soil.
