Protesters arrested in waves following second encampment (Massachusetts Daily Collegian, 2024-05-08)

"Over 64 arrested during Gaza solidarity protest" at the University of Massachusetts campus on Tuesday night, including faculty staff.

"Among the arrested protesters was Associate Professor Kevin Young. He was part of the negotiations with administration hours earlier"

Stumbled across this lovely post by photographer Darren Bradley and it made me feel very differently — warm and fuzzy, even — about our campus architecture, which he describes as being "one of the finest collections of Modernist architecture in the United States."

The photo, which is the featured image for Bradley's post, "UMASS Amherst: The Reluctant Modernists," shows one end of the building, a large concrete structure with bold angles that juts into space like an unfinished bridge. A student is passing under the suspended portion of the structure on a broad sidewalk that forks in multiple directions, with green lawn on all sides. Another modernist structure is visible in the background and the whole scene is framed against a blue sky with wispy clouds.

    @josh @academicchatter I HATED the brutalism when I first moved to the valley 20 years ago. I came back in 2019 with much more appreciation & now kind of love the concrete. Still find the library unbearable, though, but maybe that’s because I have to put up with the damn elevators.
