The right wing (Trump, in this case) stakes out an extreme position on an issue. Then the left wing (or what used to be left, now more like center-right) counters that by moderating their previous position in an ill-advised attempt to court conservative voters.
@breadandcircuses I think we should do away with the myth that it's done to "court conservative voters" when conservative beliefs always benefit power. It's done to consolidate power, voters be damned.
