Seven a.m. and I cannot sleep. Very happy to say that my doctoral defense yesterday went as well as it could.
So, as my co-supervisor put it, I'm now "on the academic market" :D
I think the best part of this (except for my wonderful colleagues and friends, who celebrated me yesterday) is that I may now write about whatever I feel like (after finishing the projects I'm already involved in …)! #PhDlife @academicchatter

In 2010, McSweeney's answered the question about snake fights at thesis defenses
Q: Do I have to kill the snake?
A: University guidelines state that you have to “defeat” the snake. There are many ways to accomplish this. Lots of students choose to wrestle the snake.
I am looking for journals to publish in. I’m only picking the journals which publish the best papers in my field. I think it’s a fair method, so I guess I don’t have to look at the metrics, right? #AcademicChatter#PhDLife
@Fury That's my approach. I never look at metrics. My metric is 'do I red this journal and cite its publications and know its authors/editors as respected researchers in my field?'
If I've never heard of a journal or an editor, I typicallly assume it's junk. It might block me from discovering new legit outlets, but it does make me feel confident that my work is reaching actual peers.
Morning. Sleepy again. Having so much trouble getting up in the morning, I went through a long phase where I could get up and exercise and shower before work, but that seems like a dream now. Anyway I am up and ready to continue work on my ethics application. So much paperwork involved! I’ve already done my interview schedule, participant information sheet, risk register and consent form, now I need to complete my study protocol, which is a very lengthy document. How are we all? It’s a wet Wednesday in Wales #PhD#phdlife
@RolloTreadway I honestly don’t know why it changes, it doesn’t seem to go with mood shifts, I’ve been very chirpy the last few days but still sloth-like in the mornings
My PhD course on "The Role of Social Sciences and Humanities Research in Sustainability Action" just went up on the Danish national PhD course-database. It will, among other things, teach you how to turn your research into a joke. So it's my kind of course.
Do boost, please. It will help me greatly and be much appreciated.
So yes, in theory a review, if it were to follow scientific protocol, could be anonymous.
But peer review is exactly not a scientific rebuke/answer to an article. Because that would leave the reader with the recursive problem of having to assess the review.
It's more like a reference in normal work like. A trusted reviewer does the work of assessing the article/proposal/... for us.
Non-anonymous peer review creates a different, and more common, type of conflict of interest!
As a young PI without tenure, I'm reviewing papers by senior people in the field who wield power over my career, because they sit on all the grant and hiring committees, and will review my papers and proposals. If I cause their paper to get rejected from Nature, I do not want my name put next to the review, sorry.
@MariaToft@ucupostgrads@ucu@timeshighered@academicchatter Have you collected any stories or submissions from the UK? I had my PhD proposal plagiarised by a pair of potential supervisors. I found out years after meeting them that they had executed my project and published a paper on it. It was such a clear cut case that the PVC-R at my university complained to the plagiarists’ institution on my behalf
The semester is already well under way and I was too busy to do so earlier. However, still proud to announce I am leading a student research group this semester, funded by #BerlinUAlliance. Together with students from all 3 Berlin universities, we're investigating #LandUseConflicts and the motivations behind #protests, applying a creative #photovoice method. Already loving the input and ideas from the students and super excited to see first results in a couple weeks! #PhDLife@academicchatter
Photos are coming in from the #IN2FUTURE Boot Camp, #IN2PAST's first doctoral school, which began on Saturday in Évora.
Experimentation, immersion, collaboration, sharing, reflection — that's what we are offering PhD students from the seven research centres that make up the Associated Lab.
"She criticized my organizational skills and told me that she didn’t see a passion or spark for doing research in me."
Pleading to passion are cop outs for not paying your, or providing sufficient guidance. This was squarely on the PI to begin with, by not reading the room or asking for timely feedback on workload. The the response left a culture of fear (nor one of responsibility and disclosure). Poor management as ever.
⚠️ There are only two days left to send us your ideas for a PhD project to be submitted to the Call for the Award of Studentships for Doctoral Research in all Scientific Domains.
