I'm currently reading Osamu Tezuka, considered to be the "Father of Manga." He was the creator of Astro Boy, and was thought of as the Japanese equivalent of Walt Disney, who greatly influenced his style.

For whatever reason, I don't recall anyone having had recommended him to me, so I consider it great fortune to have stumbled upon him. I now want to read all of his stuff! What sets him apart for me is his great moral compass.

The first ever Chapter of manga is finished!!!

I really don't know what to say to be honest... It started as a mock cover of Rid (OC) on December '23 and suddenly after 6 months 12 actual pages of an actual manga are a reality.

What I really really hope for is that when you download this .pdf and read it, it'll leave you wanting more and having enjoyed reading it :blobcatcozytea:

    Five stars: Delicious in Dungeon, Volume 9 by Ryoko Kui and Taylor Engel (Translator) (2020) mostly deals with the party trying to survive an attack by succubi. The cat character ends up being the one to save the party because she's not as simple a being as the others. She's complex because she has more than one type of desire and they are in opposition to each other.

    Chapter 1 cover updated (with new logo and changed font). It will include Chapter 00: Prologue, and the actual Chapter 01.

    Antumbra takes place in the future, and it's the story of a man, Rid, who gets tangled up in the schemes of an underground secretive organization whose purpose is unknown and none can uncover. Along his journey he meets 5 more people with whom he'll discover not only the inner workings of Antumbra but secrets of governmental military projects that were deemed too dangerous to be continued. How their fates come together and what this organization is remains to be seen!

    Chapter00: Prologue is the ending of the story, but not the end itself. It is a fast sum of the most important memories of Rid and one his major realizations. The end itself will be nothing but just a simple choice.

    So this is how everything starts. Page1 Chapter 00...

    Since it was my very first serious page it was a pain to actually get the face right while being expressive. I have no idea how many paper sheets I glued on top of each other to get it as I wanted it to be :P

    A man, Rid, main character of this manga looks at the rainy night sky. There are 4 panels. First panels shows the rainy night sky with stars and reads "everything that happened...", the next two panels cut the man's face in half at the height of the nose. Top reads "The violence...", bottom reads up "The massacre..." and lower "The pain...". Fourth and final panel shows the moon on the night sky, and reads "Was it all worth it...?"

    Pages 2-3. Decided to challenge myself with a double spread as it seemed a good fit for what I wanted to express/show as an intro to the world and general concept of the manga. With this I realized the hard way that I'm not cut our for digital (for now)... I rushed to digitize it and it started to go on and on and on with me feeling black gaps, and trying to do shadows with different brushes... And then it hit me: "You forgot to literally ink half the thing! Ya jerk!". Went back to it, and the only the cleaning up was to be done :D

    Double spread panel of Antumbra. It's black and white with screentones. It has six panels read in circular fashion from top right all the way to bottom right. It depicts different aspects of human deprivation and wrong-doings. The bottom right panel has a female face covered in shadows only her big smile and intricate earrings shown, along with the title of the Chapter 00: Prologue. In the middle is a set of eyes (the main character's) surrounded by some aura of sorts. The narration texts read "Humanity...", "..had finally been cleansed...", "..from its sins.", "and you were the one who designed it all".

    Pages 4 & 5 of as a dual spread. In these pages the introductory chapter moves a bit onward with presenting some of the main characters and giving a glimpse of the start and the end of this series.

    There was a lesson in this one because I started first by inking the background at a 95g paper, and it all got warped waaaay too much. Inking each panel afterwards was such a pita...

    Dual spread page. Ink mixed media. In the diagonal top left to bottom right is a series of panels with faces of some characters with narration bubbles giving their names starting from left are Tekehiko, Asha, Cin, Ghenkov, NULL, Layna. The background is a clear rainy night sky with lots of stars being shown. And in the top middle of the spread is a fullmoon. At the bottom middle of the spread is a bloody sword. At the top right is panel with a character in a lab coat holding a metal casing with a biohazard warning shouting "Yo, Rid! Don't get this kinda shit delievered here man!!" and a narration bubble "...from the beginning...". At the left is the main character in black clothes, white dreadlocks and heavy shoes looking at the moon. At his lower left is a narration bubble "..to this very moment...". Note: Layna's panel is covered in a very dark shadow and only very vague characteristics of the characters can be seen.

    And after a long wait here it is! Page 6 of , Chapter 00. It's less elaborate than the previous double spreads and but current life obligations didn't allow for faster speed :phoenix_fail:

    However, this one was done completely with ink and brush and digitization was only for cleaning up a few lines here and there.

    None the less, I hope you enjoy it as more parts of the basic story are introduced!

    Edit: Re-visited this page to change the background which seemed too "empty". Added some noise to the background and details to the ground which add a tad of flavour and fit better to the whole (so far) aesthetics of Antumbra.

    With no further ado I present Page 7 of , Chapter 00: Prologue!

    As with page 6 this was done on it's whole with brush pen and ink. Screentones were added digitally.

    One of the major plotpoints is finally revealed. That one thing that changed the course of the villain's plans. The one thing that was not "calculated" as it should! And it's name is Tisis*.

    *Tisis: is the final consequence that comes from Hubris. Tisis is the destruction, punishment and crash of the person who was under Hubris. (Maybe I should this as an explanation now at the bottom of the page?)

    Ink with brush. In this page at the bottom is a sword depicted out of which comes a biological substance, called biotendrils, some which form sharp edges and objects. Most the biofibrils form at the mid and top of the page a dark demonic face. Eyes slightly out of focus and hazy, with white marks beneath the eyes as teas flowing. A smile semi-mocking, semi-sad, semi-joyful with sharp teath. Around the head comes a black flames-like aura. And right between the sword and the head is a text bubble with distorted lettering "...TISIS!!".

    Dear people, page 8 of is ready and published!!! 2 panels, one of which is pretty much my pride and joy of doing!

    One more page and the storytelling aspect of intro Chapter 00 will be finished! The dilemma of the main character, Rid, will be shown... Stay tuned!

She can be seen sitting and from the side holding and kissing a frog (the stone is in a setting of green ferns, stones and tree roots). Info: The self-designed stone is a "Hike-Stone" and has been left in an unknown place to delight attentive people. If you find it, you can also take it with you. (However, it is very heavy)

    Five stars: A Man and His Cat, Volume 2 by Umi Sakurai (2018) is the first full volume of Mr. Kanda as a cat dad to Fukumaru. Both are learning how to live with each other and coming to understand that they can be their genuine happy selves with each other.

    2024 Book 1: Utopia for Realists by Rutger Bregman.

    2024 Book 14: A Journal of My Father by Jirō Taniguchi

    Literary fiction isn't usually my thing, but Taniguchi delivers an emotional family tale of reflection and regret without any melodrama, combined with clean, beautiful artwork that subtly communicates the complicated feelings throughout. 😢
