it seems this is an #InsightSaturday for me (although I keep thinking it is Sunday already). I have grown tired of very cluttered character sheets of various #PbtA and #FitD games. I like that abilities are easy to find on them but when 70% of your character sheet is filled with text that is not actionable for a character I think something went terribly wrong.

Which is why I really like #Ironsworn character sheets. And abilities/conditions on handout cards. It's so clear and table-friendly

I really want to explore Glorantha someday, but RuneQuest is a little too rules heavy for my taste. But I also don’t have a core game mechanic that I’m enough in love with to convert it to.

But like instead of stats + runes + skills + all the other stuff that goes into RQ, I’m thinking something where a character is just Runes for stats, maybe ranging from 0 to 5.

Although maybe I should just try QuestWorlds version instead.

@deinol The first thing that came to mind for me would be a relatively lightweight hack where Runes become an asset and skills/other stuff are also assets is handled in the game already.

I think it would work pretty well, all told.

Honestly, if this doesn't get you excited, I'm not sure that we can be friends. I say that as someone who doesn't even like pirates and has absolutely no intention of running any of this book with any kind of craft that has a sail on it.

Luckily – I don't have to. All the visual effects in my game are on me. And since I already play Starforged with an overwhelming flavor of cassette futurism, that's where I'm going to be.

Except with better mechanics for trade management, ship and fleet combat, some more bits on structured interludes…

You know what? You can probably figure it out.

Though if somebody puts together a full Oracle conversion for Spelljammer and I can figure out how to play an illithid, it will be extremely difficult to resist that urge.

Just saying. I'm hungry for brains. That's all I'm saying.

Speaking of PbtA, anyone have suggestions for how to handle investigation?

One of my players' characters frequently finds out information by doing extensive research. This comes up often enough that I feel like it should have a move, but I haven't found a good way to frame it

@konahart I'm afraid we're going to need a fair amount more information than that to help out much. In particular, which specific instantiation of the rules are you using?

For example, in Blades in the Dark, you would probably do it with a combination of Sway, Consort, and Flashbacks, blended together in a lovely smoothie.

Conversely, if I'm playing Starforged it's generally going to be a Gather Information or Compel move – and still might involve throwing down a flashback just for the joy of it all.

If we go all the way back to Apocalypse World, then what you want is to read a charged situation (Read a Stitch), which lets you ask the MC questions directly.

If we fast-forward to Band of Blades there are a ton of examples of how to use Research.

So you're going to have to be more explicit and specific.

(Honestly, sitting around doing research is not really the mode for playing PbtA games. At least not modern ones. It's less intrusive and more effective to get into the meat, get into the play, and then use flashbacks to deal with HAVING researched the thing that's currently opposing you.)
