CROWN OF SHADOWS (1995)

There's something in the complexity of an anti-hero that grabs the attention of readers. Such rich characters naturally provide an illustrator with opportunity to revel in the shadows. 1/4

An elegant man with shoulder length blonde hair and eyes glinting gold strides between a pair of trees barren of leaves but colored by alien lichen creeping up the trunk. He holds aloft a black sword drenched in purple flame. The edge rides a sinuous curve peaking high then retreating to upturned quillions and a curved grip tapering thin in the middle. The modest flames stand in contrast to shaded greens that tint the mountains behind him. His bearing is regal; his clothes made of fine black leather with gold trim and filigree. A purple sash runs beneath his long jacket, which sways trailing his motion. Behind him ephemeral spirits rise—the most prominent female with one arm and one knee raised. A volcano dominates the background, billowing smoke as it roils with electric green flame.

    I'm trying out a new process (check out the sketch in the comments) & I'm enjoying watercolor painting so much more already!
    I don't know why it took me so many years to finally start using underpainting with watercolor, but it's a game changer. The "ugly phase" is not so ugly anymore, I love the direction this is going and it's only 1-2 layers so far.

    THE WELL OF SHIUAN (1977)

    One of the most intriguing aspects to the character Morgaine created by C.J. Cherryh is her spell-sword. 1/3

    A warrior with arms strapped behind his back stares up at white haired sorceress rearing back on her white horse. Sitting back in the saddle, she holds out her sword. Blue energy ripples along the blade and a rift opens showing through to stars. The sky is a dark swirl of blue and purple behind her—although bright sunlight warms the horizon. It's unclear at first whether Morgaine is attacking or freeing the man. He wears only a long loin cloth, peaked helm, and boots. There's a blood bandage wrapping his upper arm. Morgaine wears a breast plate with chain beneath and banded armor over her bare thighs. Her pure white cape billows, an echo of the chaotic sky.

    A knight errant riding a Styracosaurus. Inspired by some recent thoughts about what dinosaurs would make the best knightly mounts.

    A watercolour painting depicting a knight riding a Styracosaurus in a hilly landscape. The Styracosaurus is depicted as a ceratopsian dinosaur with a single big horn, and its colouration is green and cream-coloured, except for the red spikes on its crest. It is equipped with barding (armour) on its back, shoulders, and head. The armour is unadorned save for a yellow bird on the crest. The knight is also armoured, though she has taken her her helmet off for the journey. She is a young white woman with mid-length hair. She is wearing plate armour in a late medieval Italian style, with the shoulder joints protected by additional armour plates. They are riding at a walking pace over a dirt road in a green-brownish landscape, suggesting a late winter or early spring setting. They have just passed a large rockface, and in the background we can see a hilly landscapes and a classical ruin of some sort.
