"What are you photographing?" asked the girl.

I explained that a type of was digging a burrow into which she would take a caterpillar, paralysed by her sting so the larva that hatched from the egg she would lay on it would have fresh food.

The girl was amazed, and also slightly horrified.

Hairy Sand Wasp, South Stack, , 2 June.

A Hairy Sand Wasp (Podalonia hirsuta), standing by the entrance to the burrow she was in the process of digging. The wasp is on the right of the image, facing towards the left. About two centimetres long, she is mostly black in colour, but the front half of her abdomen is red. Her head and thorax are quite hairy, the abdomen is much less so and has a reflective surface. She is in a patch of bare, sandy soil, into which her burrow has been excavated; the entrance is immediately to the left of her head and drooping antennae. We can't see the entrance but in front of it (above it in this image) we can see the fan-shaped spoil heap of material that has been excavated.
