I was in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam, recently and it was like a ghost town. Can't say I'd recommend it but our hotel put all the guests on one floor and it was still deserted. Great free breakfast but it felt weird being there.
There's lots of tourist infrastructure there. Multiple cruise lines, hotels, night markets, etc. But unfortunately the country experienced a lot of corruption and COVID cut off their tourist supply. Now a lot of buildings lay half finished or abandoned. Would highly recommend other places in Vietnam but this seemed apt for your question.
Thats bizarre, i was in Vietnam a few years ago, and it was packed full of tourists. I would have thought that given covid is basically over for most people, that it would have bounced back.
I was in Cambodia in the summer, and I had been there for quite a long time before Covid . I thought that it seemed like the amount of people was about the same, but when someone posted the numbers from immigration about the amount of visas handed out in a certain major port, it was still about 10% down.
Huh, Ha Long Bay is a ghost town? It's one of the most crowded places in Vietnam, I didn't go there when I went because it has a reputation of a factory; tourists in, tourists out, on a schedule.
Airlines are getting more and more scummy. Every flight I’ve booked in the last few years has increased in price by at least 10% from the page listing the price to the actual price when going to purchase a ticket, without any ads ons like bags. I’ve confronted some of the airlines about it, and they act like nothings wrong. Too bad the CRTC/Competition Bureau is so spineless they won’t even deal with your complaint, they just send it to the company.
We need a leftist government in power to break up the large airlines and other institutions that are throttling competition. Too big to fail should mean too big to exist.
Lord knows we won’t get it with Biden, but our alternative is worse. (Which IMO is by design).

Airlines really don't like it when you try to play games to save money. They have complicated algorithms to price their flights based on demand on where you are traveling from.
If you cancel the return often enough on the same airline, they are very likely to just ban you in the future. This is even more likely to happen if you book your flight to Germany through the same airline as the return. It won't happen right away. It might never be an issue for you. But be careful if being banned completely by a major airline would be problematic for you.
I'm assuming this will work similarly to how Skiplagged worked. It'll be frowned upon but not strictly forbidden and they might cancel your milage account if you do it more than once or twice.
Skiplagging is expressly forbidden by airlines and they will absolutely ban you if they realize that's what you are doing. They have even sued the guy who popularized the concept because of how much they hate people doing it.
But yes I am assuming they would treat your plan similarly.
Two one-way flights are more expensive than round-trip. Don't ask me why. Same reason that the same exact flight from the US is twice the price as it is from Europe.
I have tried all kinds of variations and tricks that used to work to get cheaper flights.
