needs your help! Bartmann / Bellarmine jugs were made in a very specific region of the rhineland between 1500 -1750 to be exported to England & the Netherlands. With colonial expansion they've found there way across the globe. Now an international research projects seeks to establish a comprehensive history & typology of the jugs. So if you have seen one of those shown in the Wanted Foto attached, get in touch with the researchers!

@Tinido I have just reported to the researchers that we found several beardman jugs on the wreck of the VOC ship Avondster, which sank in Sri Lanka in 1659:

@Tinido @histodons I know Nicola White, a mudlarker in England, who documents her finds on the Thames, has found a number of fragments. Always neat to see what she manages to spot and pull out of the muck.

@Tinido @histodons She usually documents her finds with the UK's portable antiquities scheme. They have a wonderful searchable database and it looks like they have several hundred fragmentary examples:

The Western Australian Shipwreck Museum has some Beardmun jugs (and fragments of them) found mostly from the Batavia and Vergulde Draeck shipwrecks. These ones were made in Frechen. Their full database of them: https://museum.wa.gov.au/maritime-archaeology-db/artefacts/search/beardman

Photo of GT837 on display at the WA Shipwreck Museum, a Beardman jug depicting a shown brown stone jug with a man's bearded face and eyebrows on the stubby neck. On the jug's body is a circular design depicting what looks like two animals holding up a shield with a five-pointed flower on it on a platform of four dots, with a large heart-shaped symbol below that. A salt-glazed stoneware it features three medallions and a bearded mask. This popular style of jug contained alcohol and was also called a 'Bellarmine'. It originated in the Germanic areas of Europe during the early 1500s, and was said to be a mocking likeness of Cardinal Bellarmine."
